I've only played through the tutorial, so take my comment for what it's worth.

The game is pretty obtuse, even during the tutorial. I failed multiple parts of the tutorial multiple times because it just wasn't clear enough in the directions, or I couldn't remember what the directions actually told me to do once they left the screen.

Anyway, get through the tutorial and you can definitely tell, this game has some depth to it. I really liked the aspects I was seeing in the tutorial. You can upgrade your city by building various things like a Civilization game, you could take part in pretty deep diplomacy options, you could upgrade characters with a nice selection of skills (wow! That was nice to see!). There certainly is some "meat" to be found here.

Whether or not it's balanced properly or fun to play in the long run is still a question for me, but I can pretty much tell that I will be spending quite a few hours with this game, judging just by the tutorial. It's right up my alley.

Maybe you can try getting it in a trade on SteamTrades? I've seen it go very cheaply there, even cheaper than the sale price. You can probably get it for one "key", which is $2.60 on the Steam Market. Just look around and you'll find someone willing to trade it to you for that. Good luck!

I just spent another hour or so with it. Pretty fun game! I think you'll be happy with it if you like strategy games. I just captured another city and then had my neighbor declare war on me when they saw I was weakened. Ended up killing my monarch and everything went downhill from there, hah. Fun game, though. I'm enjoying it.
Fair learning curve but rewarding an fun if you are a grand strategy fan or into history, which i am both ^_^
