4 July 1943 german forces started operation "Zitadelle". It's purpose was to encircle and destroy soviet forces in Kursk salient. Two simultaneous blows were delivered: in the north (Army Group "Center", Model) and in the south face of the salient (Army Group "South", Manstein). Manstein commanded best german units such as elite panzergrenadier division "Grossdeutschland" and SS panzergrenadier divisions "LSAH", "Totenkopf" and "Das Reich". It was planned to quickly pierce soviet defences near Oboyan and then move towards Kursk completing the encirclement.
It was clear by 9 July that this plan failed. German forces, despite initial tactical successes, were unable to break-out and were bogged down by strong defence of 1st tank army (Katukov) and 6 Guards army (Chistyakov). Manstein and Hoth (commander of 4 panzer army) decided to shift the direction of offensive to Prokhorovka and ordered 2nd SS panzer corps (under the command of Paul Hausser) to do that.
10 July german units attacked 69th army positions (Kruchenkin), which was reinforced by two tank corps, and broken through. But units of 5th Guards army (Zhadov) and 5th Guards tank army (Rotmistrov), which were assigned to Voronezh front (Vatutin) from Stepnoy front, were already in a process of deploying near Prokhorovka. These forces were ordered to make counter-stroke against approaching SS units 12th July, but it was neccessary to stop german advance first and don't allow fascists to broke through to Prokhorovka rail station. 11th July was the day of hardest defensive fighting for soviet troops near Prokhorovka...
