Extreme slowdown at chapter 10 (orwhenever the game use fire effects)

I just try the game game since I own Steam and maxed out the settings. Guess a GT 440 can handle this old game. The game runs fine, but I noticed some fire, smoke and other special effect can slowdown the game badly. It wasn't so annoying till chapter 9 and chapter 10. Where it's a lot of fire. Feels like we use the adrenaline slowdown the whole time.

I don't hassled to check one by one the settings, but I think I will. Anyone has encountered this issue?

It seems the game not like nVidia Adaptive Vsync, I turned off and them runs better. Not perfect, but much better.
