Absolutely DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! Its not even worth free (I paid $2 for it). I wish I could just take it out of my game lineup completely. Worst port of a game I've ever seen and shouldn't have been made even for an old console.
I got this during a sale for like a dollar. Worst dollar I've ever spent. Terrible controls, insanely stupid plot, just... no. Just no.
EDIT: I fired this game up again just to be sure it was as bad as I remember... and it's far worse. The default controls are WASD for movement, arrow keys for camera movement(which is utterly useless) and VBNM of all keys for jump/use/attack/equip. Just the most ludicrous key layout ever. You CAN change it to use ZXCVB and arrow keys, which is slightly better, but the keys aren't rebindable. Oh, and it doesn't detect your monitor's resolution, and doesn't let you change resolution.
Config menu aside, the game is utter trash. Apparently I'm running around, with cutscenes inturrupting me constantly, in a pseudo-2D world where I can't tell how deep into the screen my character is (which makes attacking enemies impossible). Nothing makes sense, the character animation is awful, the weapons are severely underpowered (And apparently ammunition is limited or something with no ammo pickups anywhere, forcing me to use the awful melee combat system), the level design is mazelike and atrocious... Just no. Give me my money back. If the game was free, I'd play it for five minutes before dismissing it as trash. As it is, it's ludicrous to expect money for this abysmal excuse for a game.
This ♥♥♥♥ing game is a wineskin and crossover emulation, takes two minutes to launch and horrid controls that can't be changed. Voice acting's terrible, the "professor" sounds like he's having an endless voice crack. Models look outdated and freaking terrible like they belong on Bubsy 3D, which is obviously not the aim of the game's textures. However, I give them credit for the map textures.
This is also one of those games that have the pain in the ♥♥♥ "stuck zoomed in on this", where it basically disables the zoom out function on your computer to acess other windows, so if it freezes, you're screwed, you have to reboot the whole computer because CID won't budge.
The fact that this is an emulation is what I can't stand. The developers obviously didn't know how to make an actual port so it runs correctly on Macs and Linuxes. If you wanna make an actual port, buy a Mac or Linux to actually learn how it should work on them.
The storyline, oh my god, as if it wren't more bland. All they're saying is that the world went ballscrazy with safety and that a robot crash dummy was invented. That's it? Why do I see him running through graveyards, volcanoes, and spaceships? I haven't gotten far into it because I already got too bored of this, but why do I see him in such random areas if he's only designed to test safety measures? And if it's a world obsessed with safety, WHY THE HELL ARE SUCH THINGS BEING LETHAL? The cover literally shows him running from a giant robot shooting lasers out of it's eyes, so the plot is misleading.
There is no wonder why this is $2. I'm impressed, I may've found one of the worst games Steam has to offer. I want my $2 back, this was not worth it.
Most of the reviews I've seen for CID make it out to be complete garbage. While I can't agree that it's complete garbage, it is an unpolished action platformer.
My first impression is that it is merely a prototype that never had a 2nd coat of paint applied. The story is there, the action is there, the platforming is there, the game fundamentals are there, but the overall integration feels weak. Add bad acting, bad controls, and a bad save system and it's open season for poor reviews.
I was actually having fun with it, but the save system is unreliable so I frustratingly ended up losing all my progress. I can't say it's a good game, but I've played much worse. For only five quarters, it wasn't disappointing.
It's an alright game for kids maybe, but for me I found it dull and uninteresting. Doesn't seem to really have anything resembling a plot and CIDs abilities are weak at best. Game doesn't really seem to make any sense, if the game is all about a civilization obssessed with safety, then how do the first few levels denote that your testing out whether things are safe? Poor implementation of an interesting idea. Gameplay feels copied, that is taken from another similar game, characters are uninteresting, and nothing super duper important seems to happen right off the bat, so I quit playing pretty darn quick. If I could I'd get a refund, since I **never** intend to touch this game **ever** again! I do not recommend this game to anyone looking for anything resembling a plot-based game.
___ To add to this Review I wrote in July 2011: No. This game isn't good. Originally I recommended this game as a joke, but its clearly far from enjoyable.
The platforming in this game is horrible. Many jumps are badly placed, moving platforms often go out of sync and missing jumps gets punished unfairly. The action aspect in this game isn't better. Many enemies are designed to be unfair to lengthen the playtime. This game originally was a PS2 and Wii game but even back then there were better looking games. Last but not least: The setting. You play as a Crash Test Dummy but this wasn't used in any way. No unique ideas or features were implemented to take advantage of being a Crash Test Dummy. They could have chosen anything else; humans, bears, fridges. It wouldn't have made a difference.
This game sucks even by indie standards. It's baby's first platformer for gamers and developers. The controls are awkward uncomfortable and uncustomizable. The terrible cutscenes look like they were made with alice and are only worsened by the cringeworthy voice acting. The story is extremely shallow, crackhouse crazy and follows the "rescue the princess" guidelines as the story's only driving force. The overall gameplay, look, feel and control is reminiscent of first gen ps1 games when polygons were new and devs were still trying to fix bad camera angles, and that wouldn't be such a big deal except this was made in 2009. The only possitive thing I can think of about this game is it features a crash test dummy. I got it when it went on sale for $2 and I would have been happier with the money. Don't buy this.
