COH won't start

I've played the COH games for years; COH, Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor. I had the retail versions of the game. I hadn't played for about 6 months, but wanted to come back and play through it again recently. I tried opening the game executable, but the game won't event start. I get an error saying, "RelicCOH has stopped working." The game won't even open, just an instant error message. I've updated my drivers, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I've downloaded the ungodly amount of patches for the game and made sure it was up to date, I made an exception in my firewall and anti-virus, I turned off my firewall and antivirus....everything I could think of, but same error every time I try to start it.

I contacted THQ tech support, but so far as I can tell, no one works there. I didn't even receive a confirmation email that I had submitted a help ticket, let alone hear from anyone who works there.

Frustrated, I said, "screw it," and decided to buy the Steam version of the game, thinking that Steam would keep the game automatically up to date, their tech support would be far better, and that the game would work. I bought it, installed it, then double-clicked it to run it, but lo and behold, the game crashes before it event starts. When I start it in Steam, the steam window pops up saying it's loading the game, then I get a Relic crash report, saying there has been a problem and the program needs to close. It gives you the option to send the crash report and a description to Relic. I fill out the information and hit "Send Error Report." It works for about 5 minutes, then says the server cannot be reached and that a zip file with the error details has been made and you can upload it at a website it gives you. Well, that website doesn't exist anymore. I tried unintalling and reinstalling on Steam and I've verified the game files and defragged the files more times than I can remember. I've contacted Steam help, but they've been unable to help me so far.

Anyways....I get four files when it crashes when I try to start it via Steam. The files are:

After reading the warnings.log file, it seems as though the game is trying to start in the wrong directory, as it can't find any of the game files. All the files the warnings.log file says the game cannot find are located in Steam\steamapps\common\company of heroes. It seems that its looking for those files in Documents\My Games\Company of Heroes.

Can anyone help me? How do I get COH to work?!? I can upload more of the crash report files if need be.

I don't really know much, but what windows are you running? Windows 8 seems to have it's problems with CoH.

Otherwise google it? or wait for someone who can help.

I have Windows 7, but the game worked with I played it on this same computer 6+ months ago. I've googled this and looked on many forums, but can't find anything quite like this. The closest one I found was 5 years ago and the reason that person's game didn't start was video drivers (mine are dual nvidia gforce 470's and are all up to date).

It seems like the problem is that some steam games need to access your My Documents folder (for savegames and screenshots and such). I've never had a problem with this - I play Skyrim, and it regularly saves to the correct folder in My Documents. Several other people with this same problem said this was the cause, and that you need to allow Steam to access My Documents, but don't say how. I'm looking at the Security tab for My Documents, and I've given myself, SYSTEM and Administrator full read/write ability, but the damn game still doesn't work. Can someone who has fixed this problem please tell me how to allow Steam access to My Documents?!?

The exact same thing happened to me. The game either will load then crash or I will log in and it will tell me I'm offline. And no matter how many times I log in, it keeps me offline. I've verified the data I sent a crash report. Please help if possible.

It might be that the cache files in: User/My documents/My games/Company of heros/cache are corrupt. These are: Login cache, global cache and ping cache.

Please try to move these files to another temp folder. COH will produce new ones that are not corrupt. Also verify that you run the program as a administrator (leftclick on the COH exe files and choose "run as administrator".

I have tried to turn off cloud syncronization and remove the Companyof heros folder in My Games to get a clean start, CoH create a new folder but it do not help at all.
I have also tried to copy the folders it say is missing into my Company of heros folder in My Games from the steam folder, to see if it would have any effect. It crash the same way except I do not get any "FILESYSTEM -- filepath failure, path does not exist" errors...

Hello at all they have the problem, the problem is that the XThread file don't can work with the other files. Go to the Guides of this Game and they is a Tutorial how you can fix it :)

It's not the XThread.dll file. I tried to replace it following the guide and the game still will not work. Again, it seems like COH cannot access files in My Documents. How do you allow Steam to access files in your My Documents/My Games folder? Also, why did Steam lose access to that folder in the first place?

It install the games by \Steam\SteamApps\common\ so and Company of Heroes was install by steam ( i dont know why ) in My Documents/My Games and the problem is the files that they try to read aren't in My Games but in SteamApp\common\ and i think either company of heroes was false installed or Steam. So you can try to install Steam again and choose the path of the Games new.

move the company of heroes files in the My Games folder and try this, because it try to open \My Games\Company of Heroes\CoH\DataSoundHigh\ in My Games but it is in Steam\SteamApps\common\

or:

try to start CoH in the Steam\SteamApps\common\company of heroes , so i mean the .exe file
