uninstall the GFWL that you have already... from control panel
download the client from http://www.xbox.com/en-US/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
find it using file explorer, right click on it and select properties, and then Compatibility
Select windows 7
then accept
start the client by right clicking and select run as administrator
it should down load and install GFWL and be about 30mb, if its more then you have gone wrong somewhere.
You can then start F1 2011 as normal in steam
This worked for me :D

Thank you for submitting your recent request to Codemasters Customer Services concerning F1 2011.
This version of the game does not officially support Windows 8, so we are limited in the support we can provide unfortunately. However as long as all your hardware has Windows 8 compatible drivers, and meets or exceeeds the minimum requirements of the game, you should be able to get it to run.
We have no plans for a Windows 8 patch, at the current time I'm afraid.
Kind regards
Rob

For anyone that has this issue.. follow these steps exactly and it works. Thanks tez..
The steps tez_hall has put forth have worked for me.
Thank you!
"go to control panel- administrative tools- services- "windows live ID sign-in assistant" if it's not running start it. (not sure on windows 8 but thats how to get there on 7/vista)"
I uninstalled the GFWL from the control panel, and followed the steps you describe. When I run the new gfwl it says there is a connection error - although internet works fine. Perhaps it is useful to note that I got this same error when I re-installed gfwl through the link you provided.
How can I fix this?
Thanks
