this damn game refuses to run no matter what.

i've tried every fix listed anywhere for any of the problems that others have had, and absolutely nothing works. each time i run the program, the icon shows on the taskbar for a few moments, (occasionally the rest of the screen will go black while the icon is present, but majority of the time it stays on the desktop) and then disappears again.
