Support for 'homemade' Head-Mounted Displays
I'm currently working on my own homemade HMD (like the oculus rift) that uses a dedicated gyroscopic mouse for simple headtracking.

I'd love to mess around with the calibration tools in TF2 but unfortunately I can't seem to access them without a connection similar to the oculus'.

I would really appreciate any helpful suggestions on how I can access the same interface as the oculus, without the hardware, as I am so close to making my own HMD that works quite well!

I would love to try charging around TF2 as a Demoman on my HDM! Please get in touch if you have any suggestions for me!

im not to big on this kinda stuff, but try an HDMI port and connect it to you moniter/computer?
Thanks for your suggestion. I've given that a quick try and for some reason it still says
'No displays detected'.

I'm tempted to see if connecting another monitor will magically fix the problem.

Essentially all I need is to access the split screen 3D 'oculus mode' as my HMD simply mirrors what I have on my desktop already.


Okay I don't know why I thought it would work but I plugged in another monitor to see if my HMD was the issue and unfortunately still no luck.

It would be really nice to be able to turn on this feature without requiring display detection because it seems things are working correctly on my side.

I wonder if there is a way of forcing TF2 to enable virtual reality regardless of display?

Well, what i believe is there a code in the console that help with like the view of the way you see your character like the oculus would. cl_first_person_uses_world_mod­el 1 (turn this off by changing 1 to 0, like all console commands)

So if you somehow get to see what your moniter sees, you can use that code to see like the oculus would.

Although I know of that command, I appreciate you describing it because its an awesome command for getting a taste of a more 'realistic' first person perspective in TF2! :)

I've played around with that command when I was playing on my monitor however, similar to the oculus, my HMD works by combining two stereoscopic images left and right into one 3D image using lenses.

Essentially what I would like to be able do is play TF2 with the split-screen images for the (left and right eye) and have the barrel distortion (shown in link below) which is useful to correct for the distortion caused by the lens.

The early stage of the occulus and it's even more barebone support in games, I would really assume that accomplishing something like you are would be very hard to achieve until other companies make VR headset spinoffs, whereas universal support for any custom monitor (jn this case, your custom headset) would be needed by game developers. I think you should wait it out and likely there will be setup wizards for adjusting screen render shape/size and such in induvidual games, or video adapter utilities, and so on.

Sorry if it isn't much help, but this virtual reality stuff is going to be very common eventually, espeically when other makes and models come out.

I've been trying out something similar. I've been playing around with Google's Cardboard viewer using Kainy to stream the game. That has worked fine. But been failing to add a gyro mouse so I don't have to use my normal mouse to control my character in the game.

What have you been trying? I hope you get somewhere with this. As Team Fortress already has some support for 3D (alas locked to occulus rift) making the jump to open source version (like Cardboard) shouldn't be too much of a leap.

To other posters, I say this in the nicest way possible, don't tell someone they can't do something. If you can't help its no a big deal. But posting that what someone is trying to achieve is pointless isn't helpful or very nice.

Also people, proof read your posts. And learn to use the full stop - sentences are your friend!

I got my Google Cardboard recently and even for it's cheap appearance it has lots of potential.

There are programs like Trinus Gyre that can stream video from your PC onto Android devices for VR display. Sadly, it's a bit useless when the game won't ouput in native 3D, which TF2 has built in but it's locked to real Oculus Rifts. Mind you, it still works in "fake 3D" mode with "head tracking" (which moves the mouse on your PC), but I would really like to see the real stuff.

I read about the "Perception" drivers which could enable this, but they apparently aren't VAC proof and I don't want to risk a ban.

TriDef 3D has a VR mode that doesn't require Oculus Rift. I've tested it with sanctum 2 and mirror's edge and it worked great, but I'm not sure how VAC will react to it....
#UPDATE# after using a magical tool called Google I have learned that there are no reports of VAC bans, but use it at your own risk.
