What is up with the price of keys now?
Keys have started going up in price now. Looked on spreadsheet and it said they are now 2.77-2.88 refined, and people on Outpost are selling them for 3 ref? Is there a specific reason as to why are they going up? Or is it that people are just letting them get away with it?

Im new to the tf2 economy but not to general economics. ill give my analysis:

keys are only available firsthand to people willing to spend Real money on them.

those people basically hold the supply power. Those of us that want keys without spending IRL money are subject to their demands. If i want a key i either have to pay what they want or what valve wants. so essentially your latter guess is more accurate IMO. although the Mannconomy gurus will prolly come in here with some amazing deduction on what is driving the price up.

It makes sense, although I think people should start putting their foot down to it. If enough people do it, then the key sellers have to give in to their demands, or they will be stuck with their keys earning nothing when they could be earning something by selling them at their normal, reasonable price.

Just like what DeathBlade said. It's almost like how Supply and Demand work.

Like I stated in the Mannconomy General thread *cough* We need to put our foot down and stop the price increases. 2.88 is as high as I'd ever go for a Key.

thing is not enough people will make a huge deal about it. i just got into wanting stranges a few weeks ago and i have my first strange: Shortstop. although its not the one i want a lot, its a strange and its mine lol. but the price of the strange i want for each class(soda popper, Liberty Launcher, Backburner, LochnLoad, Stock minigun, Frontier Justice, Machina, Crusaders crossbow, and Ambassador) is just blowing my mind. that is part newbieness, and part incredulosity(i invented a word!) at what things cost in a F2P game. The price of Valves keys needs to go down. I have a feeling That will cut back on key sellers prices.

Exactly. Its like damn, I can barely get a refined with the lack of drops I get. Last time I played keys were still 2.33. But 2.88? That's unbelievable.

Drop rates need to increase to match these rediculous prices.

I entirely agree, although it seems difficult to propose this to valve and have them listen to us. It is their main source of money from TF2 now, but reduced price too $1.75 seems good enough.

The reason keys went up in price is because of the new unusual effects that were only uncrateable during the halloween event. This caused a lot of people to use their keys during that period in the hopes of getting a very limited unusual hat worth 20+ buds. I think I read that the total number of keys in public BP's dropped 80,000 to around 300,000 total. Like others pointed out, its supply and demand. Supply dropped drastically, demand stayed high, prices rose.

That also makes sense, so maybe if we wait it out, HOPEFULLY they will drop back down to 2.55-2.66 refined.
