I don't understand the criticism of the Pyro
Whenever someone gets killed by a Pyro I see someone say in the chat "W + m1". I see that way too often. That's how the Pyro is played, what's the problem?

That's not how the pyro is played. W+M1 is noobish. This is because it requires no skill. However using your shotgun and airblasting while W+M1-ing is not noobish, because W+M1 requires no skill, Shotgun needs aim and airblast needs timing. If you think a class should be played mindlessly and valve made it that way, I don't understand whatever train of thought you're on.

I'm thinking this player wants to kill me, I killed them, I win. Incidentally, all of these accusations aren't for me personally. I see it for other players occationally. I've gotten it in the past.

They are usually referring to Pyros who never use anything but their flamethrower, and never airblast. Not only is it a cheap tactic, it generally means the Pyro will die often and they are not utilizing the other tools available for the Pyro.

Eh.
Gotta call you out on this one.
Dying to W+M1 is noobish.
Countering W+M1 requires no skill.
And placing your crosshair on your foe's center of mass doesn't require more skill to do with your shotgun than with your flamethrower.

Honestly, the flamethrower is your primary weapon, it's not like you're required to switch to shotgun or Axtinguisher to kill someone. I often just find it easier to hold my flamethrower on someone and let it do the work. But of course, I also airblast and switch to my secondary if they get out of range. Just purely chasing them down is brainless.

How is it 'cheap' if it means they die often? When I think of a cheap tactic, I think of something that has a large risk to reward gap, or a skill-indexing problem; if a Pyro doesn't Airblast literally every class can shut him down in seconds, assuming the Pyro isn't already in their face. The two exceptions are Spy and Sniper, both of which aren't good at close quarters combat, although the Sniper and Spy have plenty of chances to deal with him at mid-range, and skilled players even at close-range; a Pyro who just uses his Flamethrower and no other weapons is easy to shut down, so it's hardly a "cheap" tactic.

I mean really, unless the Pyro ambushes you from around a corner or drops down from above, it's easy to take them out of they only use their primary and don't Airblast; bounce them with explosives, run away and shoot as any class with a hundred percent move speed or greater, out-damage him with a Minigun, outpace him as a Scout or Medic, etc. It's really not that hard and it's not a "cheap" tactic; I've done in it plenty of ambushing situations where I can flame several people when a Medic wasn't present, making them scramble for healing and disorganizing a push against my team.

Granted, I also use the other tools available to me, but calling it a "cheap" tactic isn't really accurate. Cheap tactics are methods that you can't really counter or are seen as "overpowered", in most cases; a poor strategy that isn't implemented properly hardly counts as "cheap".

W+M1 is "noobish" because it takes no skill to apply to gameplay, it is "noobish" if you die to it also but countering it is easy if you know how. You should never just hold down the fire button when you can do so much more burst damage with your Shotgun or Axe, especially if you use the Degreaser.

There is so much more to Pyro than walking at people with his flamethrower on full blast. There is a secondary fire that is the best thing about Pyro and helps him in so many ways, W+M1 is noobish because there are just so many better things you could be doing rather than walking at people and being mowed down.

As a primary oriented Pyro main, I do not approve the general direction this thread is going.

Spamming airblast is just annoying not hard, and you don't have to be close to anyone. Maybe learn to kill a pyro and stop complaining. I kill them all the time, it isn't hard without airblast they are very limited range. Unlike almost any other class. And any water makes any fire useless so you better have a shotty for some close range or just beat them to death, hmmm yes beating to death that is my fav. Also flamethrower eats alot of ammo so yeah, only ♥♥♥♥♥s just run around holding fire.

you have more items than just the flamethrower, use them

Pyro got bad rep because of F2P.

That pales in comparison to uncreative and unfunny trolls naming themselves after the class.

It's true, you can't just accept the truth.
