In addition, you don't need to pay for new weapons: http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Item_drop_system
Don't bother buying weapons or really anything from the Mann Co store unless you plan on going premium, where the only benefit is the ability to find hats and misc items and having more frequent drops over your weekly 10 hours.
If you know how to use your weapon, you'll do better; some weapons like the Direct Hit may seem overpowered, due to how it inflicts more damage and travels faster, but since it deals less splash you can't reliably hit with it unless you both know the speed and manage to predict the enemy path. Just focus on a class you enjoy, but is needed, practice, and eventually you'll get enough game sense to transfer some of that knowledge to other classes.
The Soldier is a forgiving, all-round class that you could try; if you've found a class you enjoy, that's even better, but be aware that part of the reason could be your team's composition. If, for example, your team has three Snipers, two Spies and no Medic, while they have a Medic or two and a more balanced team, it will be difficult to do well, even as a good player, because you're instantly outmatched in terms of ability to hold ground, assuming equal skill. So essentially, get better, practice, and sooner or later you'll get good enough to not be demolished in seconds, or at least come close to killing many classes.
Now then; who's first to get slapped in the face?
Solemn Vow compared to the Bonesaw, exact same damage, speed, etc, except the former can allow a Medic to see enemy health and either communicate it to his team or decide whether fighting an enemy is an option or not.
Third Degree compared to the Fire Axe, which both have the same properties but the Third Degree will hit enemies connected by a Medigun beam as well, which can help a tiny bit in some ambushes by effectively allowing you to target both the Medic and patient. Not really that useful, but still better than the Fire Axe without a downside.
Those two weapons are "overpowered" compared to Stock, since they have the exact same properties, but carry a bonus. You can argue they aren't overpowered overall, but in that case you're putting weapons into tiers of some sort based on how good they are, which means some weapons are, in essence, overpowered.
A small edit; I had forgotten about the Amputator, which comes with a more effective taunt that heals enemies and still carries the same properties as the Bonesaw. Thanks for jogging my memory, Pete.
