Backstab Glitch?
In TF2, the spy is are many times I've se a bakstab glitch.

-"Backstab" on the side of an enemy
-I've actually "backstabbed" somebody in the front, while you might say, "it's just a crit", I also took his disguise 0_0
-I was playing Degroot keep one time and this demoman launched up that one rock, he landed on me, & I "backstabbed" him in the crotch -_0
-And VALVe needs to fix this: The trick stab, where a spy stabs you on the head and it counts as a "backstab"!

It's very common. By the community, it's called Face-stabbing. Last night, actually, I was playing on an Itemtest server, and one Spy was trying to Backstab spawncamp. I managed to get away after being stabbed at least 20 times, but then he face stabbed me, insta-killed, and respawned to more stabs.

And by the way, Knives don't get random crits.

It's to do with the first person model not matching up with the hit box or some such thing, also lag, in my experience it's almost always due to you or your tagets ping. In short; Welcome to VALVes' Melee hit detection.

In the magical land of the internet, there have been rumors of a terrible monster called "Lag". Many brave heroes have wandered into his realm, but none have returned, "Lag" terrorizes poor villages, leaving destruction in its wake. After many years of enduring the reign of "Lag", they villagers gathered up to make the Sword of Lag Compensation. "Lag" would still strike, but the swords would repair the effects. The End.

Backstabs count on the back 180 degrees of the player model.
Lag compensation causes you to think you stabbed them from the front.
Knives have no random crits. Even if it was a crit, it would do about 120 damage.
Again, the back 180 degrees of the model. They can stab you in the back of the head (I think).

There is a special technique that you can do to make it look like you get a facestab

Lag, hit detection and such.

I do believe it's Matador\Blind stab. It may look like a sidestab and such.

Thats not a glichts, its fu*ked up game design.

The area, in which a spy can backstab, is 180 degree´s big, which means he can backstab you, even though hes not in your back.

Add the misreably made hitboxes and hitdetection of TF2 and evola.

You realize the amount of work put into the game's physics, hit models, hit detection and such? Its not easy. Lag also can have an effect on that. The game is a lot more complex than it seems on the outside. Think about how much programming is needed just to see your knife flip around and swing. Anyways, 180 degrees is technically the "back".

Doesnt matter. Fu*ked up hitdetection is fu*ked up hitdetection.

I just have to spectate a sniper for 1 minute, and i can be sure he kills someone who got out of his fireline at least 1 second before he shots. You can even see the bullet hitting nothing but air.

Maybe thats a reason why TF2 has so few precision weapons.

If 30 is the highest ping on the entire server, then there is no lag. But the impossible sniper kills stay.

Thats like if Toyota produces a totaly sh*ty car and then try to excuse it by sayin "The doors can be opened remote controlled".

It would be great if Valve would fix the "side-stabs" and "face-stabs", because then, I can eat my samvich with more safety from spy noobs using Your-internal-reward.

Its as if Toyota spent years on new car and its beautiful except the doors can't be remote control opened, and you complain profusely about it.
Though I concede on the hitmodels part. I think that that is a problem - though, most of the time, it could also be server lag (which is annoying).
If you consider ONLY front and back, and don't consider the side. Like how the Northern Hemisphere encompasses half the world, not a fourth of the world. But you could argue it either way.

Read http://technofovea.com/blog/archives/278.

Old, but still valid AFAIK. The mechanics are somewhat peculiar.

General advice for non-spies: You usually shouldn't try to melee spies. A good spy will probably be far more familiar with those mechanics than you are, his melee attacks fire at millisecond 0 rather than later in the swing, and *you probably have a better weapon in another slot* unless you're completely out of ammo or you're using the Jarwacka combo.

It is not lag related, you can facestab on local servers as well.

They just wanted to make spies a tad eaiser so there for the hitbox is larger than normal.

Server lag, or the other person is lagging?
