High ping in TF2
I used to get a normal 20-70 ping every day depending on the server until now. I can generally play for hours, then close TF2, reopen and it goes up to 250+. Sometimes on the first time I'm playing it does that.

You could try dropping your connection settings by one notch in Steam options. I hear Steam uses that setting to decide how many servers to ping at once, and probably how much bandwidth your games are going to use, too.

If you wish to lower your ping then:
don't download things while playing (includeing torrents)
don't have any web pages open (this includes the steam overlay)
if there any other people useing the internet at your house this can cause high ping
the further away a server is from your country/connection the higher the ping will be
ending some programs your not useing helps use task manger at your own risk
set tf2 to have lower quilty so the game runs a little faster
avoid wave 666 it has mass lag (mostly)
invest in a better computer (or upgradeing your current one)
uninstall games and programs you are not useing
defrag your computer
viruses can cause lag so run a anti virus scans
purchase a better internet plan (at least adsl 2)
if your useing wireless try getting closer to your router (or use a wireless repeater)

Theres not much else you can do besides those.

I only have two things to add to paperchaos' comment.

Certain anti-virus programs will actually cause lag and should not be used.
McAfee butts into everything, and every anti-virus with real-time scans will always slow you down. I'm not saying to turn off live protection, but you should be aware of scheduled scans.

Wireless should not be used for any real games. It's bad enough when players in Mario Kart DS jump across the map from international lag, but a FPS needs perfect timing.
Most laptops have ethernet jacks now, and 10' (4M) ethernet cables only cost about $8 US.

Ping won't change much because of a better computer.
