How does level affect item value?

Effectively, item level is purely cosmetic, and does not contribute to any beneficial trait to an item's well being. But sentimentally, people regard it ias a trademark, trend, or even collector's trait. But how is level schemed out, if you were to write out which level is most and least revered by players?
On TF2Outpost.com (a trading platform, for those of you unfamiliar), I put a trade out that I was selling my S. F. Holy Mackerel, and someone told me that because it's level 42 (it's also level 42), its price might be higher than what I had posted. Should I acknowledge this as credible?

The Holy Mackerel is always at level 42, that's part of the joke/reference, he's trying to make you look like a fool.

i dont think the level on a weapon affects the price. But the level on a hat can. People tend to pay more if its a specific level like 99 or 100.

the special levels are 1, 42, 69, 99 and 100

but yes the holy mackerel is always lvl 42


there are also odd leveled weapon, those are weapons with levels that are not the intended one, for instance, a holy mackerel that is not lvl 42 would be very valuable

Level is still a detail that people take critically when buying the items they're looking for.

The price for those is as much as anyone will pay for it.
