Some other people are having trouble with it too.
There's a reason only GNU/Linux users get him but no Windows/MAC users.
I am installing TF2 now.
Just to clarify I did not install Linux to get the free tux item, I have been using it for many years.
It would make no sense to use Arch Linux instead of a user friendly distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, ...) to cheat one's way out of getting a free tux item.
VMware Workstation 9.0.1.894247, ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso.
No updates, no additional drivers and apt-get's.
Just install Steam from http://media.steampowered.com/client/installer/steam.deb ,
using Terminal (sudo dpkg -i steam.deb) & Install TF2. Launch and have Error (bad OpenGL driver)

But received Tux.
NO VirtualBox (can't launch Steam Client)
Thx alexmk for his manual http://alexmk.hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Install-Ubuntu-Steam-TF2-under-VirtualBox-on-Windows-to-get-Linux-Tux-Promo
stop promoting the lame way of getting this item and install Linux for real you lamos.
That's some serious FUD about Linux From Scratch! There has never been an easier way to install Linux than that. Everyone should use it to get the Tux the easy way.
Just to clarify, Linux For Scratch is an quick and easy way to have Linux up and running (so if you just want to get a silly hat), but it sucks (the interface is attrocious) if you really want to try it out and potentially keep it. If that's the case get something like Ubuntu instead.
