In-Depth Guide: Install VirtualBox, Ubuntu, Steam, TF2 to get Tux Promo.
I wrote a clear How-To guide on setting up Linux & TF2 under VirtualBox: http://hub.me/aeVZv

Let me know if this has helped you, and hopefully it will encourage some to venture out in to the GNU/Linux world.

I had problems with unbuntu itself, i installed it and downloaded tf2, twice, and it kept saying the game wasnt available, ill try this out. Wish me luck.

You ask for ppl to let you know if they get TF2 to load in VirualBox. That won't happen because the emulated video card in the VM isn't going to work with graphics drivers that will run the game.

Hey you never know someone might be smarter then me, but still you can get Tux using VirtualBox which some people will find useful.

Yep it's a cool tip. Just didn't want anyone to think they could actually play the game like that. No VM supports 3d acceleration.

VirtualBox supports 3D Acceleration both OpenGL and DirectX, you can play Quake3 and many other games.

The issue has more to do with Steam and TF2 then drivers, virtualbox driver is similar to Intel Integrated driver which is capable of running 3D applicaions quite well.

I accidentally clicked "remember password" should I change my password after this?

Awesome man!
But it is compatible with VMWare, or not? Otherwise I'll just have to download VirtulBox!

Also, I'm currently having issues "updating" Steam on VMWare. Is there any workaround for this?

it worked for me in VM.

This isn't a problem, the vdi virtual images are clean and hosted on sourceforge. But if you want you can change your password anyways.

I had no issues updating under VirtualBox, I have not tried VMWare.

Ok yea, apparently it's updating properly now - 143,xxx / 174,xxx KBs

Still kinda confused on the part where the guide explains on how to copy the .gcf files via auto mounting though.
Not sure as to where I'm supposed to auto mount it and how, lol!
Never really used Linux Ubuntu, so sorry if I look like a newbie :D !!!

*Update: Done updating signed into steam and everything not only need to copy the *.gcf files over to Ubuntu's version of steam! How exactly should I do that using VMWare, any ideas?
Protox Feb 15, 2013 @ 1:07am
Sorry you would have to use Google for VMWare mounting I haven't used it in a while, perhaps someone else knows. In the worst case you can redownload TF2.
