Why is it called Team FORTRESS?

I get the Team part but I don't get the Fortress part. Anyone have any ideas?

Base?
Big building that belongs to RED/BLU?

Because in TF1 the buildings kind of looked like fortresses.

The very first maps for Team fortress where mirrored maps, usually two military bases with each team's flag buried deeply into them.

2Fort and Well are two maps that where "converted" from the original game and have this style.

Back then it also was the first mod (i believe that had a sense of "team owned" sides of the map) with fixed respawn locations and defensive positions around them.

Team is for teamwork, and Fortress- well, it could refer to several things.

But I think Fortress refers to 2Fort, where there are 2 Forts on each side of a sewer, or it could refer to your team defending the fortress or attacking it. And Fortress could be the control point, the entire map if it's Payload, the building housing the Intelligence, the bomb hole, etc.
