Team Fortress 2
Make sure you know the price of what the TF2 item you are buying.
It was cold day where I live, I couldn't go outside because of the snow. I decided to go play some TF2. I was in a server playing scout when a person said they were selling a Strange Widowmaker in the chat. I was insterested so I asked them how much. The guy said it was worth 20 keys. I was dumb enough to beleive him. He said that he would give it to me for a couple of hats or misc. I agreed to give him my Genuine Killer Exclusive, Kringle Collection, Fast Learner and a 2 other hats. I was very new to trading and didn't know what any of these items were worth. I accepted the trade and thought I walked away with a good amount more then I thought. It was a day or two later when I looked up the strange widowmaker on TF2 outpost and they were only going for about 5 keys. Less then the amount of these items I traded for the widowmaker. I thought I was going to die a little. Then I went on spreadsheet and there the widowmaker's price was. 5 keys. I got really mad after that. The items I gave him were about 1 to 2 keys each. I got sharked. From that day forward, i will always look up the price of an item before trading it. I thought about sending this guy a friend request and tell him that I overpayed. I tried to but for some reason it said "Error Sending Friend Invite" in red. I will never make this mistake again. Don't do the same thing I did. Let this be a lesson to anyone who is new to trading, don't listen to everything the trader says. He could shark or otherwise scam you out of your hard earned virtual items. Don't rush through trades either, take you time to think about the trade. Especially since a lot of these transactions include many high priced items like Buds and Bills. I will forever have that strange widowmaker in my TF2 inventory to remind me that I am a human who makes a lot of really dumb mistakes.

This is neither a trade thread nor a blogpost and I was outside with my dog for 20 minutes, so he doesn't whimper when I want to sleep.

Still, the OP lags paragraphs, nobody wants to hurt their eyes here.
His 'message' is essentially this; don't believe everything that everyone tells you, don't rush into trades, don't trade for items you don't know the value of, don't be greedy and succumb to hasty temptation and don't lack common sense. While most rational beings can do this, unfortunately, you'll get a lot of people who just don't seem to have any common sense or are incredibly gullible, which leads to threads like this; I mean really, trading for an item you have no clue of the value of, and taking the word of someone who can directly profit from you?

I mean really, you deserved this one; most people who get sharked really do deserve it, and with the rules of the free-market economy, which Team Fortress 2 trading falls under, it's perfectly acceptable to do, especially since they aren't harming you in real life.

Thank you, that is a better way of explaining it. I am bad with communication. And again, sorry to anyone who think that this should be the obvious. I just wanted to restate it because you can be surprised how many people still don't know this nor understand. I probably should have put my thread somewhere else but I couldn't think of anything so I just decided to put it here on steam.
Any also, sorry If I posted this forum in the wrong area. I should have put it in trade forums or something.
♥♥♥♥ happens, i sold my first hat for 2 weapons, we all make our mistake, we must make sure to never make them again tough
Your not the first and you won't be the last to trade items of lesser value. I have done it myself in the past, you learn from it and move on.
Yes, we all have had this happen to us. And I mean all. I traded away my first rare drop, a High-Five Taunt, for a freaking Brass Beast!
I think all my trades were bad trades :(
I just avoid trading ppl now, the prices give me a headache!
Yea it happens to new players. When i was new i traded 2 hats for a few weapons and i felt like crap. Now i know all the prices and my bp is worth 300 times more than the persons' who sharked me.
I had two bad trading experiences. Within my second week, I traded my Madame Dixie for a Vingtage Natascha. I also traded at least 15 items for a strange force a nature (I did not know the value went down). Silly Me.
My friend got scammed for trading his buds. This scammer said that his 4 weapons were vary rare.
