Official servers versus Normal
Is there any difference between official servers and user servers? If so, what, and how can I tell the difference between the two?

Valve servers may be laggy. Don't have mods (some exceptions). No admins so the users have to use the trust system when kicking users via vote menu.
Custom servers. abusive admins. custom plugins. custom maps. reserve slots. dnator privledges

There are some major differences between officals and dedicated. Offical servers normally are mod and plugin free which for new users is a great way to have them get used to the game. Dedicated servers work a little differently, when on a dedicated server often you may see a few familiar faces because dedicated servers have a community behind them which allow them to have moderators and admins play there to keep everything clean and according to their rules. Dedicated servers can also have mods and plugins that can change the playing experience in many different and unique ways. Hope this answered your question!

Thanks for all the info! But is there any way to tell the difference on the server selection menu?

Valve servers should be named like "Valve Koth Australia 12", press tab to display the server name. If it has Valve in the server name, its a valve server. If it doesn't it is not one.

Most servers you find in the servers list will be dedicated but if you are looking for an offical server you can type "Valve" into the tags bar and you will only get Valve servers. If you do NOT want offical servers in the list you can search for ones the do not include the tag by clicking the arrow and the begining of the tag bar.
