Spy is underpowered.
Speaking as someone who's had close to 800 hours clocked in with Spy, and having played him as my second primary class ever since release, I'd like to say this: Spy is underpowered. He's a joke. Plain and simple.

Why?
Because hundreds upon hundreds of hours of playing as spy has taught me one thing.
How skilled you are at playing spy has nothing to do with how effective you are with him.
Rather, how effective you are is based on how un-skilled the enemy team is in dealing with spies.

No amount of skill can deter enemies from instinctively spychecking every teammate they come across, spamming every corner of every room when they see a flicker of your cloak, or immediately turning around and melee-critting because they heard your uncloaking sound. No amount of experience can stop you from getting hit by a stray rocket or sniper bullet from behind that was aimed at someone else to begin with, or your backstab failing to register and getting mauled by every enemy nearby.

My point is, spy is almost entirely based on luck and how incompetent your enemy team is, and Valve sorely needs to change this.

The Spy isnt suppose to be powerfull,he has a job and that is to kill enemies when they least expect it.His job may no be easy for some players but what he does,he does it very good.If you are having trouble why not try the Dead Ringer?

Because the Dead Ringer is LOUD and draws attention to you: the last thing a spy needs in any situation. It's also very short ranged, only useful on narrow maps with chokepoints and full of spam everywhere like Dustbowl or Goldrush - though effectively useless on other maps.

The Spy is a risk versus reward class; if he can stab a Medic, then even if he dies, his team benefits from the kill since the Spy is not as valuable as the Medic. If you've been exposed via bullets or fire, then you've probably walked somewhere you shouldn't have, barring a Pyro who's looking for Spies, and if you get nailed by a shot aimed at someone behind you, well... You were probably in a bad position to begin with.

A Spy is more effective the less the enemy team knows how to play, but without coordination a Spy can still perform relatively well. I'm not sure how you play, but some Spies choose a certain Watch, Knife and Disguise, and just stick with it through the whole game; that's asking to get yourself shut down by a good player, even if you rotate the Disguise, because they know exactly how you can react. If you're a predictable Spy, you're dead against a decent player.

Once they fix the hit detection you can complain about backstabs not registering; I'm tired of a Spy who's playing on a toaster stabbing me in the face, which somehow registers as a backstab due to his lag, and he earns a kill he shouldn't have. It works both for, and against, you at the moment, in a manner I think everyone supports fixing.

I think they should impliment the warping effect on spy. When the spy presses keys A & D then on the enemy's screen he should look like a photo graph blur, but only as long he doesn't press W or S. However jumping while pressing A & D is allowed.

It make him harder to hit unless the enemy starts spamming.

"My point is, spy is almost entirely based on luck and how incompetent your enemy team is, and Valve sorely needs to change this. "

I have no words for you...

You know you could only engage enemies when they're distracted and you could also you know use your gun.

You know, you just insulted tons of competent teams.

If a team got screwed over by an enemy spy, then they are not competent.

If that team got screwed over by a spy, then they are not competent.

You don't need to get screwed over by solely the Spy; sap a Sentry as an Uber is coming, nail their Sniper while he's trying to pick off your allies or cause enemies to chase you, diverting them from their primary objective. The Spy is only based on luck if you have no skill and play against a team using the same weapons over, and over, and over; half of your arguments show lack of skill, while you also fail to take advantage of distracted individuals to secure kills, which is exactly what you should be doing.

No amount of experience can prevent what you said, but when you get yourself into those situations it's generally due to a lack of skill, barring getting checking by every player, since that's just common sense; the Spy isn't always viable, but if you're forcing yourself to play him then I can understand where you're coming from. Paranoia is a part of Spy gameplay, and if you continue to adopt the same habits players will adapt to destroy you, while if you switch off Spy and assume another class you may very well make other players waste time searching for you when you cannot be found.

Maybe because a competent Spy is doing his best along with his team?
Or maybe you should just read and look some experienced spy player.
Also what Octavia has said.

Am I the only one here who agrees with him, I'm always getting hit by stray rockets, videos like 'Spy's creed' Make it look so easy but in reality you're just gonna get burned to death by a phlog pyro or hit by a rocket while invisible, its really a matter of being in the right place at the right time, you always turn corners only to run into an enemy, but if you had joined the server at a different time you wouldn't have! Spy needs to be faster or be able to walk through enemies while cloaked.

Spy's creed shows up a deep true on how Spies tend to start and later tend to get better.
Aim training, disguise training, how to instant deal with engineers etc etc.
All your ideas to buff the Spy would kill and make him totally overpowered.

Did you read the discussion starter? any competant spy can win a fight, what we're talking about is getting killed in the most stupid ways in TF2 as every class has an advantage over him.

So is for Medic
So is for Sniper
So is for Engineer
So is for Heavy
So is for Demoman
So is for Pyro
So is for Soldier
So is for Scout

Duh.

If you're getting spychecked, don't get seen?...

Every class in TF2 has it's own role and the Spy is definitely not a class meant for direct combat. It's pretty obvious that if a Spy goes face to face against a Soldier, for example, and both players are at a similar skill level, the Soldier will probably win.

The Spy is meant to stall, to destabilize and to break defenses from the inside when a push isn't working. He's absolutely balanced for that. Complaining that he can't do everything you want and that if a good player sees you, you're dead, is probably because your playstyle just isn't suited for the Spy.
tsukayomi 20 ม.ค. 2013 @ 6:46am
why not hit the last disguse button while you are disguse to change the class weapon before they spy check you when they see you. It's very helpful.
