just keep playing, its a really fun game, trading with friends and other people is one way to get more items or playing a lot and wait for item drop

Just play the game, you've barely gotten started. You'll get items as you play.

Try Mann vs. Machine. There is always a better chance of finding some useful items (if you don't have them already). Plus it's a good way to reinforce the basics, honestly better than training mode in my mind, and with the 4 maps, there are so many strategies. Good Luck and Happy Gaming :)

Here is a list!

Getting random (And a liiiiitle bit uncommon) item drops,

Playing Mann vs machine, Mann up mode, (You get more items the more squad surplus vouchers your team has)

Buying items from the store,

Using a key on a Mann Co. supply crate,

And finnally... Trading.

Buying premium i think lets you find random items more frequently. Too get premium you must buy items from the Mann co. store.

And lastly, there are a few achievement milestones where you can be rewarded with a specific item.

That said, it should be noted that items are usually balanced to be ~sidegrades, rather than straight upgrades. The initial, stock weapons are in fact often the most versatile.

Items really should be one of the last things you should be focusing on.

Start your own server and explore the stock maps so you know where to go.

Then start some training maps with bots to test out the weapons. You should get familar with stock weapons before moving to whatever drops. Knowing how to use the stock provides a good foundation. This really shouldn't take more then a few hours total (like 2~3) to learn the maps (while you're not being shot at) and to get a feel for stock weapons and how the classes work together.

Then once you're familar with the weapons and maps enter regular play. Doing the above will likely boost your Kill to Death rate and make the game more enjoyable down the line.

As for items, they drop at a regular time frame. The more you play (up to 10 hours) the more you get. You can also ask for weapons in game. Some players (like me) are generally kind enough to just gift you spare weapons and items that aren't strange/festive/unusual/rare. Frees up space in our backpacks.

I noticed you have a salvaged crate in your inventory. Those things are worth quite a bit. You may be able to trade that for a sizable amount of items.

I think there is only one straight upgrade of a stock weapon: The Third Degree. Every thing else has some downside to it. I don't think anyone cares because virtually every pyro doesn't use the stock axe. If they're using a reskin, it's for the Lolz.

The Detonator is a straight upgrade of the flare gun.

You are forgetting the Amputator, the Solemn Vow and the Holy Makarel.

The "no upgrades, only sidegrades" rule doesn't apply to [stock] melee weapons.

Nope.

The Detonator deals 41 damage to burning targets.
The Flaregun does 90.

Holy Makarel doesn't do any more damage. Or has any ingame benefits. I guess if you want to argue that public humilation is a direct upgrade sure (I did rename my Fish "HUMILATION!). I'll grant you the other two though.

The Detonator deals 41 damage to burning targets.
The Flaregun does 90.

The wiki says they do the same amount of damage.

Holy Mackerel can actually work wonders with Dead Ringer spies IIRC

The Makarel enables the "Special Delivery" set bonus and the public humiliation ruins a Deadringer Spy because it doesn't go "FISH KILL!" if the Spy only faked his death.

Base damage yes.
But the Flaregun does full critical hits on burning targets whereas the Detonator only does minicrits.

This person speaks the truth! Both the flare gun and detonator have their advantages and disadvantages so neither is a "direct upgrade".

Also to speed up getting things play alot until it quits giving you stuff take a break a break from the game like a day or 2. Then comeback play a different class and repeat.
