Good Melee weapon for a Defensive Demoman?
I seem to have trouble finding an adequate Melee weapon when I find myself against any class who decided to get down and dirty on me. I usually use the Caber, but I feel I must pick something else. I would love to use my Eyelander but sacrificing 25 hp seems a bit too much for me.

So I ask, what would be an excellent melee weapon to use as a demoman when I catch myself in these close encounter situations?

Try the Persuader: doesn't sacrifice any HP, and any ammo becomes health ;)
Or the Zatoichi. I prefer the Persuader though.

I personally wouldn't focus to much on a melee wepon as sticky bombs are great for against the wall situations, I use a stock melee with no diffrent stats because for the most part its always unbalanced, the persuader may give health but unless you want to trek all the way back to spawn for ammo all the time its not usefull, caber hurts you, you lose health on most swords, the skull cutter makes you to slow to hit anyone. I just don't worry about it

I know you don't like the health penalty on the Eyelander, but it's probably one of if not the best Demo Melee. You just have to be able to get a couple heads and the benefits really outweigh the downsides.

Don't use the persuader you'll run out of ammo very fast and waste time getting ammo at the spawn. Eyelander is not good without the shield, its hard to get melee kills as demo without the shields since your so slow. The bottle is the best melee, you'll hardly be meleeing as a decent demo so why sacrifice health for it.

Bottle or caber. I typically stick with the caber for humor value more than practicality -- my close-in defense is mostly through pipes, but occasionally I find a stationary, unaware enemy with his back turned and it's just *so* tempting...

Stock melee is best melee for Demo.
So either Bottle, Pan, Freedom Staff or Bat out of Hell.

Eyelander - great for speed and health BONUSES, but since you fail to mention that I guess you haven't had much success with it.

Claidheamh Mòr - range bonus of the Eyelander but with no health or speed bonus, and 15 health off your total. Good practice for using the eyelander. I have been using this with the Loch n Load fairly often. However, I wouldn't recommend it for defense. I use it when I'm up close with the Loch'n'Load because I know I won't have time to reload if an enemy gets close to me.

Scotsman's Skullcutter - probably the best weapon for a truly defensive demo man. Range bonus of the last two weapons, but also a 20% damage bonus. The only downside is the slower movement speed. If you're playing a defensive role this is a great weapon since you shouldn't be out in the open too much. If you're using a shield, thats great, but because theres no health penalty you can also sticky jump more freely with this weapon equipped.

Persian Persuader - Great for playing demoknight. When combined with the splendid screen they allow you to charge twice as often as you would with anything else. The downside is that it leaves you focused on melee combat, since you'll run out of your 16 grenades rather quickly. Unless you're defending your spawn point you're going to find yourself wasting a lot of time crossing the map to get more ammo. You do not receive ammo from engineer dispensers, or medkits.

Half Zatoichi - Surprisingly good for defense. If you don't kill someone or if the enemy is driven back before you get a kill you can always run to the resupply locker in order to put the sword away and get back to your grenades and stickies. If you use it correctly (finishing off someone with low health) you'll find you're running back to spawn MUCH less than when using the persian persuader.

Pan - identical in range and damage to the Persian Persuader, Half Zatoichi, Bottle, Every Other Melee Weapon In The Game Except The Scout's Bat, except it has the jarring psychological effect of having the most annoying sound effect in the game. I am always getting killed by this and its only because of the terror and panic I experience whenever I hear that horrible noise. It just makes me nervous. It makes the hair on my arms stand up.

Conscientious Objector - '_' ... This weapons taunt is identical to the Bottle's taunt so it looks oddly like the demoman is drinking the crap and rainwater which collects over time at the bottom of a street sign. Also you can put a bird on it if you have a jpeg of a bird. Put a bird on it!

You can't object on something that doesn't have pro and cons and can be used all time.

Stock is usually best. Maybe use the Pain Train if you're on offense and the enemy team is using mostly Soldiers/Demos/Pyros.

heh, I had the same question a little while back (Didn't bother asking other people) I answered this question myself by testing some weapons out, so this will help you somewhat. The best melee for defense is (By far) the pursuader or the zatoichi. If you want to be reckless use the pursuader, but if you are good at spotting the right oppurtunity to get up close to the attacker's... use the Zatoichi

I've got my decal and objector all ready for deployment...today!

Not a bird though. I'll probably use my Steam profile pic.

This. I'd even say use the pain train on offense regardless of the other team's classes if your own has a good medic. But on defense stock is best.

Unfortunately that pic will probably not come out so great due to the color restrictions. They used to allow full color decals, but they removed that feature. 3 colors only now. >;(
