DX10... DX11
I understsand TF2 currently only supports up to DX 9, but my hardware supports DX 11.
2 questions come from this:

1. Does anyone have any thoughts about when DX 10 and 11 support may exist?
2. Would this backwards compatability requirement cause strain on my hardware and ultimately poorer game performance?

It seems that even very powerful computers are having trouble with TF2, so I highly doubt that VALVe would implement DX10/11 support.

But isn't it a possibility that the powerful computers are having trouble because they're using outdated technology which they weren't designed to really use?

I'd find that very hard to believe, as it would be rather stupid for new computers not to be designed with the ability to run both new and old technology properly :P

I just upgraded from OSX 10.5.8, to 10.6.8 and not only did 14 gigs of space magically reopen itself on my hard drive, but TF2 is running smoother, and at higher graphics settings. My computer is from 2008 and all of this is just from upgrading the operating system. I wonder if there we be such a difference if I upgraded to 10.8?

very interesting suddenlySAD, but i don't know how well that would translate to Windows platforms (which I am using). Glad to hear you've gained improvements though.

And Zyroxeon there's loads of new hardware and software that doesn't support old versions of things. It;s a way for manufacturers to force their new versions on to you

Not to drag up an old forum or anything but now that directx 11 has been out for a while, there is always the part about that some computers (like the one im on) run DirectX 11 way better then directX 9

They have trouble because the engine is old and inefficient, for many people half of their cpu cores or more lay idle, never mind the gpu.

They just aren't willing to invest in it is all.
I think theres a change that if it were reworked from the ground up for dx11 performance would actually improve, many improvements in each dx level are in efficiency, like being able to draw more objects or whatever without hitting certain bottlenecks....
