Dead Ringer.
Why do people complain about it? I mean everyone has the right to express their opinions but this is mine. Spies were really ill-equipped when the game came out. The spy update put the spy in a somewhat equal level as the other classes. I mean the spy has the backstab. Yay.. But his other stuff won't protect him when everybody sees him stab someone in front. That's not the point though. Some people complain way too much that they scream on their mics about how annoying it is that it causes a desruption. But you know what, this isn't going to stop it. This is simply just a rant. Have a nice day.

i dont like it, but is there any way to actually kill someone with a dead ringer?

Dead ringer is actually something for survivability. As well as the other watches really.

the dead ringer is the best tool for spying, no discussion about that
I don't see why complaining about that when we got weapons like the backburner or mini sentries

Airblast off a cliff. That isn't survivable. Can't feint death when you're off a cliff.

Dead ringer is too often used as a crutch by bad spies.

I did, once upon a time.
Except I died instantly after, so there was me and my handsome twin falling to their deaths.

The flip side is that DR is mandatory against a team that spy checks and has good pyros.

The issue is that the Spy has always been a risk versus reward class; with his default setup, he isn't meant to tackle enemies when they can see him, and if he is spotted he should be killed. Some Spies believe they need to get a numerous amount of kills, but obtaining kills on key members of the enemy team, such as Snipers, Medics, Engineers or Heavies, contributes a fair amount to the success of your team, as they can be difficult to deal with or contribute a lot to their team. He is fragile, but has the potential to instantly kill any class and tools for stealth.

Then comes the Dead Ringer. It forces a Spy to be seen before using it, which instantly removes the raw stealth factor, and it allows a Spy to escape situations he should have perished in; you can literally have a Soldier land all four Rockets on you and still live, even if all you did was take out the Dead Ringer, and you don't need to worry about shimmering from damage for six point five seconds. The Dead Ringer is difficult to use stealthily because so many giveaways and tracking methods exist, and once the enemies know you use it, they will always search you out; it becomes less of a 'risk' and more of an 'annoyance', especially when you consider how a bad Spy can consistently survive against a good player, unless he's a Pyro, purely because he has the Dead Ringer.

People dislike it because it doesn't promote a risk versus reward play-style the Spy was built on, while making it so players who have little skill can tank large amounts of damage and occupy the enemy team with little effort. You can literally stand out in the open and take shots, without needing to worry about shimmer for six point five seconds; sure, the uncloaking sound is loud, but then enemies need to chase you down, and they had to wait for your timer to expire, even if they knew exactly where you were going and tracked you very well, despise the no shimmer aspect.

All in all, it's good too many 'forgiving' mechanics for a class who is built on the premise of 'risk versus reward'; it may lower the reward, since backstabs become more difficult, but the risk is greatly reduces and it forces enemies to occupy their time in waiting for the Dead Ringer to run out and chase you without you actually dodging shots or skillfully avoiding them, so essentially, you're taking enemies out of combat consistently as they attempt to actually kill you. The Spy simply becomes too much of a pest, and not enough of a threat, since many classes can do nothing against a Spy while he uses the Dead Ringer during those six point five seconds; it's ridiculous, because using any other Watch a bad Spy will be clobbered in seconds by a good player if he's spotted, even by a Medic, but with the Dead Ringer, many classes can do very little against him initially.

I don't see it as a big problem. If your pyros are any good they can take out spies even with dead ringers. No biggy.

My point is that you can't come back from that. DR takes the initial enviromental death, feints and you die immediately from the same enviromental cause. Thus, effectively a cliff airburst or bounce can kill a DR

That would be a hack. Which, after every hack I've seen in this game, I don't believe is impossible.

dead ringer is only good if you can play well
Afterglow May 20, 2013 @ 3:10am
DR is okay, but to experienced players it becomes really obvious.
When I play with a DR, I disguise as another member of MY team, makes it a lot less obvious.

Plus not very often someone would disguise as another member of your their own team.
