TF2 in the future?
So, we all know how TF2 is right now, with the hats, and the trading, and the promotional items, and the retired hats, and so much more. We kind of know what'll happen in a few years. Just more promotional items, maybe a few weapons for Christmas, but let's take it a step further, into the far future of TF2. What'll TF2 be like in 10 years, 20 years, 50 years, even 100 years? Will it be a multi-million dollar success, where it becomes THE game amongst games, or will it flop, and sink to the bottomless pit of nothingness, to be replaced by Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo, even some other games, only to be discovered in a few centuries by hackers.

Will they have a big celebration for TF2's 50th anniversary, with a poster exclaiming "Remember these? Well, they're back!" With the nine retired hats back on the market?

Will VALVe retire more hats? Will they add paintable weapons? Unusual miscellaneous items? Unusual Strange Festive painted weapons?

What will happen to the big TF2 commentators like STAR_, Shibby, Jerma, StabbyStabby, and more? Will they grow old and die (most likely)? Will their children take over the YouTube business?

More importantly, will we ever have the strange Gunboats, Rocket Jumper, and Sticky Jumper?!

This thread will probably never get to see the light, but hey, I like to think big and express what I feel. Please post what you think'll happen to TF2 in the long awaited future, and I hope everyone gets to live and see TF2 either go big, or go home.

Honestly, I can see TF2 dying in the next 10 years. If not, then I _highly_ doubt the community will even survive for 20 years.

What will happen when Gaben grows old?
Will we even have a future in 100 years?
Also, unusual miscs exist, like the part phantom and hazmat headcase.

I think TF2 will live on, just like many other Multiplayer FPS that had a great following (Counter-Strike, Quake 3 Arena,Unreal Tournament)

I can see it now, when the source engine has passed it's life- the STEAM network capabilities will be better than ever.
TF3 is totally a possibility in my mind- a full conversion from our current TF2- weapons, hats, badges, paints, the entire back-pack in general being tied to your account. When you purchase TF3, all your TF2 items come with it- to a whole new engine and hightened graphical detail and polish.
Of course, it would be a new game entirely, people still playing TF2 would not be playing side-by-side with TF3 players- but simple as it was when TF2 was released- Purchase entitles premium membership. TF3 in my mind, wouldn't ever be a F2P download.
I mean,
Hopefully by the time TF3 could be a possibility, I hope the gaming industry comes to a solution regarding the silly free-to-play issues we face today. They say "free-to-play", when they mean "pay-to-win".
TF2 F2P's are given the very same weapons as anyone with premium- VALVE did right, now, F2P's have all the same opportunities and choices as premiums, player skill being the deciding factor in victory, unlike other games with largely over-powered micro-transaction-only items becoming game breaking and/or punishing new users, for being NEW!
I have faith that VALVE will continue to hold true to good business practices, and be "the good guys" in the industry that we know they are.

I don't imagine the STEAM interface can change or get much better than it is now, but simply evolve. Perhaps the STEAM client we're using now will be one of many options, If you desire, STEAM could be installed as an operating system, and selected for use at boot after the bios-
An operating system that focuses all your computer's resources on the task, unlike now, Windows 7 eats up RAM and CPU usage simply in it's idle process. STEAM will probably be highly customizeable in 5 years, and I'm sure it'll be a lot more accessable.
Even further than we currently use STEAM, It could be a bastion of efficiancy and usefulness beyond simply being a digital gameing marketplace and platform- Imagine having a .STEAM e-mail address? Associated with your personal steam account, <Username>.STEAM e-mail accounts could be viewed in a similar fashion to face-book- hosting user-made videos, highlights, achievements, info. ect- whilst being veiled and protected superbly by VALVE's excellent security measures. People could e-mail your .STEAM in-box, and auto-matically assign seperate in-boxes- "STEAM Users"-" 3rd Party"-"Spam"-Blacklisted", ect. In real-time.
With your personal steam account tied to this .STEAM e-mail address- the Player Market's evolution could be...crazy. Good or bad, it could allow for people to spend their account's wallet funds in a browser, via steam client, in-game, or the community marketplace.
This new level of market open-ness could allow for sale of physical VALVE merchandise, like the Pyro and Demo figurines recently released, for example.

TF3 wouldn't be fantastically different in the way "playing" feels like, drastically change game mechanics we all know and love, or bring any "surprises" initially. Updates will still be a vital way to keep TF3 up-to-date with additions of maps, weapons, asthetic modifications, and providing means to keep the community on their toes and always wanting more.
What TF3 could be- is TF2. But a lot-lot better looking, feeling, and sounding. New large-scale maps, possibly a few additional weapons/items to bring new strategies and techniques? Perhaps the addition of a "Modifyer" or "trinket" load-out slot? Common, all-class items- many to choose from, but only 1 can be equipped. Simple things like.
"Dried-Up Goldfish. - Provides 10% movement speed increase in water."
Or "+20% explosive resistance / -10% Bullet and fire resistence." - "+10% movement speed/ -10% physical damage"
If you catch my drift, basically, "pocket" items- little optional class dynamic modifications that could result in 2 scouts with the same weapon load-out- having completely different stats.1 is equipped with "-10% movement speed- 25 Extra hit points" while the other has "+30% reload speed/-50% Weapon Switch speed."

People would be much more cautious in strategizing and performing when everyone has some sort of small- yet important buff/de-buff aiding them in a strategy only the foe knows.

Yet, it's the future. TF2- and TF3 if it will be, will live, or die- and we'll be happy we had it.
But I'm sure they'll give us lots more guns, and hats before TF2 is through. :P

Paintable weapons? Sounds like the kinda' fantasizing best kept in hopes for TF3.... Maybe some day.

What do you mean by glitched ones? There are unusual miscs, http://backpack.tf/unusuals/337/Le_Party_Phantom. I dunno how else I would show there would be a bunch of unusual miscs.

Hmm, I always thought they were glitched. Someone said something about those misc items used to be hats, and that's why they can be unusuals and no other misc items are, although I'm probably wrong.

Probably new game engine, aka counterstrike style, but with items moved into the new one.

Unless vr gets way way way better, we will still be playing fps in 10 years. The basic mechanics of fps 10 years ago were the same after all, just the graphics and polish have got better...well in death match...
