huntsman vs sniper

i can only properly use the huntsman and not the sniper rifle
how can i get better with the rifle

Practice. That's how you became good with the huntsman (I assume) and it's the only way you'll get better with the rifle.
Note - by practice I don't mean stand on the 2fort battlements scoped in all the time. That will make you a bad snoiper. Learn to pick the right target and be able to hit moving targets, and headshot players at close range. Learn when to charge up, and when to quickscope, when to noscope. And watch for spies :)

Try producing random motion then quick scope headshot and win. (Quick scope means 0.5 second or less)
If you want to do bodyshot, just get the croco set.

I don't play Sniper a lot myself, but I have two ideas that might help:

1.Be aware of what's around you. Let's say that you're on Upward, and there's a heavy guiding the cart. You have a nice clear veiw of his head, but there also happens to be an enemy sniper who also has a clear veiw of you - In this case, it would be a good idea to get out of the way and relocate, lest you risk getting killed.

Also try to listen to what's nearby - you just may hear a spy uncloaking, or a backstab in progress.

2.Stay very far away from the field. Even with a sniper rifle, it can get harder to hit something that far away. So staying far away might be a good help (Though it will also be harder for you to hit enemies).

Probs not the best, but that's all I got.

Bodyshot without croco set is stupid, you will get headshot quickly.

Practice by headshotting slower targets like Heavies and Soldiers so you can get a feel for leading your targets properly, then move on to the other classes. Keep in mind good Scouts are hard to hit so don't expect to get many headshots out of them; headshotting a Scout requires a lot of prediction and leading, as even a Scout that is running in a straight line can still be hard to hit because of their speed. You're usually better off bodyshotting a Scout so that way they don't go after your other teammates, but keep in mind they are usually not priority targets so try not to hunt down the Scouts unless you have to.

Also, Sniper is generally the most dependant on both lag and your computer's specs as you will just end up missing your shots if you stutter a lot ingame, so if you have performance issues try setting the graphics lower in the video options to keep a more stable framerate.

What if you can't land the headshot? Do you just completely pass up the opportunity to do damage?

Well you should have no problem there then. Keep in mind your internet connection also plays a factor; if you have a high amount of ping in-game then you will lag regardless, which will affect your accuracy. Just stick to nearby servers to have as low ping as possible.

Actually, due to lag compensation, a slightly laggy sniper may have an advantage over his opponents with lower ping. It can lead to such frustrating things as getting headshot around walls and so forth. I don't encourage intentionally increasing your ping or fiddling with your interpolation settings, it's just free information.

Bodyshot = always wait full charge then shot, only work if there's no enemy sniper (or enemy got noob sniper). When you charge, you're bloody slow and easy headshot target.
If you can't get a lot of headshot, why play sniper???

1: Adjust your mouse settings so you can do a quick 180, but yet still maintain control of where you want to point your crosshairs.
2: On the server search for internet, include Sniper in the filter.
3: Practice, practice and practice.
