The Spycicle...
It's not OP, no.

It just ♥♥♥♥ing sucks, seriously. Why is it so appealing to f2p/newer spies? The idea behind the Spy is to stay undetected. The Spycicle defeats it's purpose; hide kill in feed, sure, but leave a sodding great ice statue behind? Pointless. It gives away that you're in the area, there's a frantic spy check (often resulting in death) and it melts when a pyro gets close. I honestly can't understand why it's so appealing, I mean, the novelty of ice statues died after 0.2 seconds.

So, newer/f2p spies, and fellow spies, why would you say the Spycicle is so 'popular'?

(I felt ranty today, sorry :3)

EDIT: I made this post a while back when I played pubs. I do lobbies and I'm in UGC now, and I understand this knife is better than I first pecieved. Please don't hate :)

It's pretty much a direct upgrade to Stock.

It guarantees you a free extinguish; that's great.

Much easier to stay undetected if your position isn't obvious due to flames surrounding you.

As TF2Gentleman will tell you, you shouldn't be in the same area after securing a backstab. If they can't see you drop cloak and stab someone, then they can't see the statue. If you're chainstabbing they won't look backwards to see you; if you're not then you can move elsewhere while the Pyro is misdirected around the statue.

This is IMO; I was just wondering why f2p spies find it so appealing. It doesn't even look nice :3

You see an ice statue, you know a Spy is gonna be nearby. Maybe retreating, but still nearby (most of the time). A handful of pyros that see a fresh ice statue only need to go w+m1 in a handful of directions, and if they catch the Spy, he's dead. There's too many cons for pros, it's not a practical or tactical knife. The stock, of course, is always the way to go.

It's a popular combination with dead ringer. Get killed, Get extinguished, pyro won't know what direction you are going, and you can easily just run the opposite direction he was chasing you unless the passage is too narrow.

The Spycicle is usually better than the stock Knife. The situations where you would have been better off using the stock Knife is rare. The only main reason to seriously use the stock Knife would be if you're just trying to kill someone and you don't care about whether or not you die at all. Otherwise, it's usually a better choice to use the Spycicle. The situations where a pyro is going to stop you just before you manage to stab someone probably won't happen frequently, and you shouldn't be able to reliably stab people when you're on fire and you aren't anywhere close to them.

You act as if the ice statues are going to tell the enemy team everything that communication won't. If the enemy team is communicating, the ice statues are barely a downside. The Spycicle kills not showing up on the killfeed is much more significant than the ice statues that you actually believe is significant. The killfeed tells will usually tell me more information than I would not have received if I just saw an ice statue. The ice statue doesn't really tell me anything aside from the obvious fact that someone died. I don't know how recent it was unless I try to figure it out myself. For all I know, the spy could be far away from the area by now. I also doubt that a good spy would even remain in the area after he kills someone regardless of his knife.

The Spycicle is meant to be a fear tactic weapon. The fact that a big hunking ice statue next to you, frightens players. It is used for the spy to be feared. It helps the spy cheat death and survive pyro attacks. A 15 second cool down for your survival is a cost, I am personally willing to take.

You can...

Just like to say that you revived a dead thread haha. In all honesty, I'm now slightly convirted anyways. It's a near straight upgrade in comp TF2, due to comms giving you away if you're stabbed anyway, so it's just the stock knife with a get out of jail free card. In pubs w/ competant players, the ice statues are still a giveaway, but I'm starting to see the appeal of this knife :P

I use it all the time. The point isn't to hide me, it's to turn off the flames to either give me a getaway or time to shoot the pyro in their face a few times.

I prefer my YER instead however you have more power with the spycicle.

What if you could backstab enemies with an Australium knife, and they would turn to gold like with Saxxy/Golden Frying Pan?
Star and Moon Apr 10, 2014 @ 4:22pm
I like it because ice statues often go unnoticed, you can fool some pyros if you use it with Dead Ringer, and the only REAL downside to it in my opinion is the lack of taunt-kill.
