What CPU is recommended for this bloated game, currently?
Apparently my AMD Phenom II X4 940 isn't enough for this 8 year old game anymore.
What's a great CPU that'll keep the framerate above 120 at all times?

Whats your budget.

Super low right now, but in the future I'd guess around $200-300

intel i5
What's your GPU?

Make sure it's not that before you make a CPU change

GTX 660 Ti. No problem.

I'm not sure why you would want a framerate over 60 to begin with. The human eye can't even keep up with framerate changes after 60 anyway.....

It's not so much about the human eye keeping up with the framerate as it is the feel of the input/control response. 60fps feels noticeably more sluggish compared to 120fps, especially in the fps genre. Btw, my framerate drops as low as 45 during big fights. It feels extra sluggish and it has caused me to lose a few times. I've uninstalled TF2 until I can upgrade the CPU (new mobo required).

Ahhh okay. I thought u were just concerned about visuals, but that is true, although I wouldn't know the difference between 120 and 60 because I'm only ever at 60, but dropping to 45 doesn't sound like a CPU problem. Your CPU is better than mine and we pretty much have the same video card (I have a regular GTX 660).

Sure something isn't running in the background while playing?

I mean dropping from 120 to 45 is a pretty big drop.

Indeed, it is a big drop. I just don't understand why. Another game, CS:GO, suffers similar drops, but not in same situations. I think maybe it's because the Source engine is sorta ret4rded? I dunno. CS:S always stays above 200 with chaos going on. L4D2 drops under 70 occasionally when sh!t's goin' down. Every Source game pretty much stays above 150 when not much is happening. So which hardware is responsible for managing the chaos? The CPU.
Anyway, Source or no Source, I'm in need of an upgrade for new stuff.

Edit: To your question about something running in the background: Nothing unnecessary is running.

Once you get used to 150, you notice drops to 60 FPS real fast. It's not something that's easily quantifably defined, but you do notice things get comparatively sluggish.
