Is Chargin' Targe a crutch?
I seem to actually perfrom decently with this, so I'm unsure if my skill level with demoman has actually increased.

The hell is a crutch?
Also, if you use pipes as a primary, theoritically, you should have improved with them. The stickies are a lot more versatile than the targe, though. Amazing for defense and offense.

You really don't know what a crutch is?

In real life, it's those things that people use when they have a broken foot or something. It helps them walk, y'know. Something to stand on.

So, in games, it refers to something (usually an item or weapon) that helps bad players. Something for them to "stand on."
between the shields, the splendid screen is actually the crutch. A demoknight should know how to use the charge to crit and not need to rely on the impact damage to get kills.

I only use the splendid screen because it goes with the persian and booties, and becuase the charge damage actually can help, but does not mean it is a "crutch." It still takes some skill to use.

Just out of curiosity, does that mean that it's possible for a weapon to be a crutch in one user's hands, but not a crutch in another if they use it differently?

From what I've gathered, if its considered a crutch, its going to stay that way, regardless of how one uses it.

Booties are useless. You're crutching. It doesn't take any skill at all.

What I meant was that almost everyone I've seen use the screen is using it for the purpose of doing damage with the impact. A demoknight should know how to get kills with his charge without relying on that impact damage.

Tomix is actually making a thread that doesn't have a chance of getting himself banned?

No, it's not. It's an attempt at a sidegrade that offers a fairly significant change in capabilities.

A crutch-like secondary would be something like:

- launches proximity stickies that detonate the moment an enemy is within the blast radius, if sticky is armed
- stickies are visually distinctive
- cannot be manuallly detonated
- can only have 4 out at a time

It's a crutch because while it's basically the same as the SL how you'd use it, it requires less skill to do a *little* bit with (easier airbusts, no need to watch a trap) while being severely limiting and strictly worse than the stock sticky launcher in the hands of a skilled demoman (who would have more stickies out and manual detonation control).

The 'targe isn't strictly worse; while it's less versatile in terms of active abilities (not letting you jump across the map, not letting you set up a sticky trap for high burst damage at a distance) it compensates you with additional movement capabilities (quick linear motion, can go airborne with this), high passive resistances (among the highest achievable in the game short of having a Vaccinator medic, and giving you a solid edge against an enemy demoman), and melee crits on demand (with ease depending on how willing you are to exploit bugs). It's very different.
A crutch? My friend, a real crutch is the Darwin's Danger Shield. I'm sure many snipers will agree that the ability to survive a quickscope headshot (which a sniper should normally never survive) is one of the most annoying things in this game. BUT, it's quite hilarious when you get that across-the-map smg kill after the headshot. :3
