Because this game is about randomness, no matter how much you'll try to change it into a pure competetive game.

The game is random without random crits, and I can think of at least two other popular game series that are even more random than TF2 (BF4, CoD). Random crits in TF2 can be compared quite directly to some of the major complaints people have of BF4 such as rubber banding and shots not registering, and invisible walls. I'm pretty sure that the people in battlefield would hate random crits too. Also, the key word in OP is "unfair", OP didn't even say things about competitive.
Which includes people liking randomcrits just as people who don't.
