It could be an anti-virus/firewall problem. Have you got it set so TF2 is allowed through your Firewall?

At the moment Steam's pretty unpredictable. I can't even log in, it just hangs on the connection screen for 45 minutes or so, with my net connection being 100% A-OK.

im not sure. how do i know what i have allowed? and it was fine up until like 2 days ago and i hadent changed anything at that point

Double check you're on the right tab (internet games) and you have NO filters selected whatsoever. No region, no vac, no nothing. Make sure the manually typed tag filters are empty. Do a full refresh of your server list and see if that helps.

Last time I had this problem it was because my connection had ballsed up and all the servers were taking more than 150ms to respond and thus filtering out.

Failing that, consider setting TF2 to opt-into the beta; that fixed the "no item server in offline mode" issue for players a while back - so if you're just stuck on an old version for some reason that might give it a kick up the backside.

As Ashes pointed out - a likely suspect would be software or hardware firewall; although that requires more research and effort to fix that the above solutions if you aren't familiar with how your router works.

Hmmm, sounds like a Firewall problem then.
The easiest way to check if it's your router's firewall is to surf to your router's web-interface, and try putting your PC's LOCAL IP into the DMZ. If that fixes the problem you know it's your router and you can remove your PC from the DMZ and take further steps to configure your firewall.

If that doesn't fix the problem, remove your PC from the DMZ anyway (for security reasons) and we can see about checking any software firewalls you may have.
