some maps just need more processing power.
some weapons can also cause lag.

Its nearly all the time
TF2 has the worst optimization I've ever seen in a released game. So that's probably at least part if not most of your problem. I can get 150-220 FPS on a map by myself with Chris's Max Quality config, but when playing with a team of players or bots, my FPS can be 40-10 FPS with sudden spikes that go down to around 5 FPS. It wasn't even always like this, it just got worse over time.

Oh wait, you're serious. Don't come to a discussion about technical things if you don't even know the difference between FPS and latency.

The only thing I can think of is maybe when you're facing a graphics intensive area, like with a lot of people on screen or at a part where you can see a lot of the map at once or something. Or even when there's lots of explosions, fire, bullets etc going on. (sometimes it seems it may not even matter if you SEE it, as long as you're facing the graphics intensive part)

But that's just a theory. Maybe mess around with the settings a bit? Turn off some Anti-aliasing / Anisotropy(?) filtering / water effects / etc?
fishy girl can (Αποκλεισμένος) 9 Μαρ 2014 στις 12:24μμ
you could always install a FPS config

Sorreh, meant to say FPS issues. (Even tho lag sounds better in the situation)

You know what's funny? Sometimes using lower quality settings decreases your FPS. Illogical, but true.

FPS issues happen with bots AND OTHER PLAYERS, but not when it's just me. When it's just me, I get around 4x more FPS.

The system requirements haven't been updated since the game came out in 2007. With all the new updates and content, over the years it's become a much more demanding game.

Back in 2010 I could play on max graphics settings in full resolution. Now I need to play in lower resolution, with FPS configs and all the graphical options set to low.
