If there were a competitive mode button on the title screen, would you click on it?
Would you? It could be a button on the title screen, wedged in at the between the servers and training buttons.

Competitive mode = 6v6, 9v9, 6v9 and I've heard talk lately of people getting into 4v4 though I've no idea what it's like. The rules of each "mode" are complex and vary considerably. This OP is for gauging interest mainly, so this is not the time and place to mention all of the details. The purpose of this idea is to act as a bridge between pick up matches and public players.

It's to attract NEW tryhards, NOT to appease existing tryhards, I repeat THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE AN EXACT COPY OF THE KIND OF RULES AND RESTRICTIONS FOUND IN tf2 6S LOBBY PICK UP GAMES.

Okay?

Obviously there is going to need to be at least a bit of the competitive structure, not all the restrictions, just enough so that the mode is somewhat similar to the real thing which would give players an idea of what to expect. The bare necessities.

Not sure of all of the details of how this could work, or what exactly is necessary and unnecessary. Pretty sure that each mode should adhere to the class limitations, as these are kind of the core that each mode is based on. Could probably relax on item restrictions, maybe have crits enabled too. Due to the tenancy of tryhards playing to win, I expect that a match making system which matches players of similar skill levels should be integrated into the competitive modes. The soldiers who go 4:1 positive wouldn't want to be held back by some new guy who goes 1:2 negative in every public game, and the new guy wouldn't enjoy getting his face kicked in constantly. This is probably one of the requirements for the idea to work properly. Maybe take it a step further too, and divide people into leagues ranging from beginner to pro.

That's all I've got to say about this for now.

I would just go play competitive, no point in breaking apart what's already here so we can turn TF2 into LoL.

Community does a better job of it, and if it's Valve vs. community Valve instantly wins.

tf2center.com there you go.

You seem to misunderstand the point. It's about getting the attention of people who like TF2 and are mostly oblivious to what it can do for them besides the stuff they see on the main menus.

I would try it and I think it's a great idea.

I don't find much value in pub play where its 80% about team stacking and 2 minute rounds or trying to penetrate a towering defense alone with the rest of the team getting dominated by a single pubstomper. Finding a game with anything that resembles balance takes time and even then the teams are prone to re-stacking quickly if one side starts to do better. The servers without restrictions easily suffer from 5x classing and servers with restrictions suffer from noobs reserving the slots.

I would love the idea of skill-based matchup (however rudimentary) and meaningful class limitations. But my hours I can put into the game are too few and irregular to consider competitive. So this kind of gameplay option would definitely be something I would be interested in.

So, after Fl4me wars have started, Im going to reply on a serious note, k?

I think it would need restrictions or quickly turn into smaller versions of current pubs. Anyways, I would be okay with that idea.

If it weren't for our lovely community.

EVRYONE would go and try it. Even these who haven't played 15 hours of game yet. Who don't know anything abou the game. It wouldn't be "competetive" gamemode, It would be official version of Highlander matches. Idea is nice, but just can't work.

Community does a better job of it, and if it's Valve vs. community Valve instantly wins.
WTF are you talking about? Why it should be Valve vs. Community? If Valve would decide to implement this, it would be with support of community. They would never go directly against it. Besides, community leagues have a few VERY UGLY downsides.

And waldo, please stop making threads like this. I know you may just want to hear some opinions, but you and Spencer Pootis have already made a name in community. You know where Im heading, right?

that is the basic idea of it, yes.

That would be great...Except that, as previously mentioned, it would immediately get invaded by Gibusvision noobs. If it had a requirement of 500-750 hours of TF2, then it would be alright though.
