Steam market bot writer who got banned and lost $10,000 worth of items
http://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/comments/1e03tn/iama_steam_market_bot_writer_who_recently_got/

I know this is old news and I'm sure a lot of you have seen this. But I think it's worthy of being resivited and discussed.

if you're too lazy to read the article.

A guy made a bot that will automatically buy anything on the Steam community market that is below market price. Thus he made a fortune. However, this was illegal according to Steam ToS and his account(s) was/were terminated including all his items which were worth approx. $10,000.

Why I bring this up, if this guy gets banned for this, why aren't websites like scrap.tf and such getting the same? Geel* used bots to craft a #1 tuxedo misc before, are you going to tell me that is different than to what the guy in the article above have done?

nah it's just that when that story was revealed no one really mentioned Geel.

Maybe because Steam Market involves real money, and scrap.tf is more on metals?

TF2 items are worth real money. Steam wallet funds are the same, yes they're numbers that have currency but they're not connected to the amount of money you have irl, same as tf2 items. I know I didn't explain that properly but I hope you get what I mean.

I'm thinking he had to change some of the files in his game to get it to work and Vac recognized it as a cheat. I could be wrong but it seems like a legit idea.

Honestly it is kind of a crappy way to do buisness, smart, but crappy. Everyone else is searching and searching and this guy makes a program that auto buys anything under market value as soon as it gets put up, almost creating a monopoly and setting the prices himself later on.

Probably because I crafted a single hat and I wasn't the only one to do so.

i was with you about how scrap.tf should face the same punishement until i acutally read the TOS for myself, it specificly says cannot you bots to automate trading in the market. scrap.tf is in the community and does not buy anything from the market.

There have always been bots on Steam Market. There always will be.
Pick anything in your Bp and put it on sale for 75% less than market price. It will sell instantly - and by that I mean quicker than a person could physically click on the item, tick the t&c box and press the 'buy' button.

OHHHH so thats who bought all those australiums that were listed by people who had no idea about the price and sold them for $1, I see so many stupidly low prices in the item history and i just wish i could be lucky enough to find one but i guess the bot writers get them all :(
