Backburner OP?
I have played for alot of time and seen alot of balance changes and I have never seen one change to the backburner, which I find to be more OP than anything that has ever been nerfed.

Read the changelog on the TF2 wiki. It had its +damage removed so it isn't better at W+M1ing; and was given a (broadly useless) airblast.

In that patch, the stock flamethrower got a 10% Damage buff. To rebalance the items, they simply removed the +10% damage on the Backburner, and added -10% damage on the Degreaser and Phlogistinator.

When you see an enemy Pyro use a Backburner, you might want to consider why he doesn't think much of your team.

May 19, 2010 Patch

Reduced Backburner damage bonus from 20% to 15%.

April 14, 2011 Patch (Hatless Update)

Damage bonus reduced to 10%.

June 27, 2012 Patch (Pyromania Update)

Removed +10% damage bonus attribute.
Note: Because of base damage increase by 10%, damage remains unchanged.
So you're half-right. Though, should point out, it was still put on par with stock and that's what really counts in whether it's OP or not when there's no argument on stock.

No. The backburner is probably the ♥♥♥♥tiest flamethrower in the game, even worse than the Phlog. The airblast on it sucks and you will be a corpse when your base is rushed by soldiers and demos, because you can only airblast 4 times without collecting ammo.

I'd like to ask any one who says that it is't OP, how?
It turns pyro into a ranged spy that has more health, faster walkspeed(wiki doesn't say but test it), an airblast, and immunity to after burn...

Because its a straight downgrade unless you manage to outmaneuver your foes as a class as mobile as a Sniper and as stealthy as a Soldier more often than the enemies put you or your team in a situation where more than 3 airblasts are needed.
Put in such a situation, it's bloody awesome, given, but that's a pretty small niche.

Yes, almost the same.
Just no cloak.
And no disguises.
And no lag-compensated guaranteed one-hit-instakill from behind.
And only half the backcrit angle to begin with.
And no faster walkspeed, feel free to check it; the console command is
cl_showpos 1
And no health-peeking.
And inferior backup-weaponry for mid-long range.

Backburner's great in certain spots in maps where you can get behind people (there's more than you'd think, especially with the Detonator), but, like any unlock, it's more situational than Stock, which isn't bad by any means.

In other words, it's fine.

I never use the backburner, it's useless IMO. I can't even help my team with that airblast, or defend myself.

It's not OP. It's situational. In some circumstances, it wrecks ♥♥♥♥, but aside from those situations, the stock does it better. Plus, it costs 50 ammo to airblast. That means you screw up too many times, you're boned. Unless there is ammo right next to you.

backburner is a very niche novelty/joke weapon. it depends entirely on the obliviousness of your foes. IMO it should be reworked in the way of a buff.

take off airblast altogether and give it a huge damage penalty (25% or more, maybe really huge 40 or 50%), but alt-fire is now some kind of extremely limited cloak. i'm imagining RMB spews smog which confers variable transparency while in contact, which is lessened by movement and can increase to total invisibility if allowed to. so a pyro could becoming invisible by standing still and alt-firing for a few moments, or just spray all around an area to get an edge with partial transparency during a head-to-head fight. smog would linger for a few seconds at a time. Maybe a health bonus as well. Let Pyro play Spy a little bit (but without the counter-sentry capability).
