Exaggeration much? Why are you guys so mad about the item server being down? Yes it happens every so often, but not "50 times a month" or anywhere even close to that.

In what way? I mean, come on, a server is a ♥♥♥♥ing computer. Computers have issues. Get over it, it's fixed now.

Yeah, you are right, not even close to that, more like 20 times a day. I guess you are one of the players who doesn't trade. If you were trading you would know that because if the item server issue only 1 in 8 trades work. Not that the item servers are down, they just aren't functioning properly.

It was down for one day for a couple of hours, didn't effect me much but it WAS a bit annoying. Still, 50 times a month might be an exaggeration.

Software architects on decent-scale services who fail to properly account for the chance of hardware failures and the like don't deserve to be considered software architects and should either actually consider reliability and scalability, or quit the field and do something better suited for their competencies.

Numerous organizations have very, very large distributed systems -- often large enough that at any given time a non-trivial number of components are failing and need replacing. Traffic often varies considerably, network partitioning is a realistic situation, eventual consistency can be a hard requirement. Many of these organizations get it right far, far more than Valve does, and when systems *are* disrupted it's often to only a small percentage of the user base and they're more communicative.

Consider the financial clearinghouses -- ACH transactions, for instance; or the huge number of ATMs and the like. Think of AMZN -- very high volume, pretty stringent requirements to never double-charge people or so forth. Google, Facebook; extremely high traffic, extremely reliable, it's newsworthy when there's an outage and they're veeeeery good at making sure that widespread outages are rare.

Valve clearly doesn't have such professional standards and competencies when it comes to their platform. They're decent distributors, but they're not actually very good at their server infrastructure compared to other tech-related companies.

Learn your facts please. I trade quite often. Hell, I've been trading and been on trade servers longer than I've played the actual game. Where the heck did you get that from? Trades work just fine for me.
