If the demoman is so OP...
why did he lose to the soldier in WAR, all those years ago? More to the point, if they went at for a second round, would demoman still lose? I can safely say that the soldiers unlocks since then has only made him better at killing demoman, and yet the demomans unlocks have been primarily focused on making him better at melee than at blowing people to giblets. So Demoman has had the worst of the updates, but people should be better at this game then they were in 2008, and if I remember right people were quite bad with stickies back then, which is kind of a big difference between then and now considering that it's almost impossible to be a bad soldier.

Also, beyond soldier vs demo other classes have been buffed up since then.

Pyro got the degreaser
Scout has always has been the demomans worst nightmare, and he's been getting heaps of items to make him even better at dealing with demos several items like bonk, atomizer, BFB. Not that he needed them or anything,.

engineer: short circuit, wrangler. enough said.

and the rest of the classes these days just deal with demoman in the way they've always done.

Waldo is calling demoman UP.

if this is to end in flames
then we should all burn together
Consider that the F2P update happened in between this time.

Ok? Ok.

Now write another post with that in mind.

The WAR update Soldier win was likely due to more Soldiers mains at that point, or Soldier being a bit simpler to play. :p

EDIT: It was also a fairly close match.

Well, I expected the Demoman to have an easy win back in the day, it was a nice surprise when the Soldier won. I never thought it would be possible, and I still have no idea how, but it was a good day.

To be fare, some of the melee builds he has are annoyingly OP. Screen, persian, and booties are pretty annoying to counter when you have a bad team.

he can fire 4 120 damage pipes that roll and deal splash or directly hit and deal damage and 8 stickies with stackable damage at about 60 to 140 damage each, and a great demon can only be killed by an equally great scout if the scout gets a good enough advantage, demo has the 2nd least amount of counters. Soldier won the update because maybe playing soldier is more fun because you have to actually aim the rockets, rocket jumping is more versatile, and you gain a hitscan weapon as well as an explosive weapon. Soldiers about 75% as powerful as the demoman but it is made up with in terms of versatility

if you were actually around for the demo vs soldier update you would be aware the fact valve made an officail statement about it being unfair. there were server dedicated to farming kills on certain classes. there were like 3 players who stood out the most like 250 kills every few minutes however valve didnt release their steam identitys.

so using that as a argument fails.

in other words by a hair, and as FleaBite said it was a totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ competition anyway. What OP says is definitely true, though, Demo has stood pretty still while other classes have surged ahead in means of obliterating him. Even with the classes as they existed contemporaneously, though, I think a fair contest would have had Soldier win, just due to the effective range differences. After Gunboats, no question, the 'roamer' Soldier is a killing machine that SHOULD be capable of easily taking any other class 1v1.

The propaganda contest. Had that not happened, the scores might've looked like this:

Demoman - 6,347,979 points
Soldier - 6,346,065 points

Demoman's strength comes in the form of his versatility. He might not be the absolute best in any one scenario, but if used properly he can be exceptional at nearly any task in the game, provided you use the right equipment.

He can be effective at close, mid, and long range. He can be a powerful tool for both offense and defense.
