them look like toucans. Since nobody had discovered
toucans in Europe yet, they assumed that plague would
not know to infect them since the plague would have
no idea what a toucan is.
I've heard nearly same thing but with burning(?) Sulphur.
Or maybe all of the toucan, herb, and Death theories.
EDIT: It is all three
The front part of the beak is filled with perfume and flowers to hide the scent of death.
The back part of the beak is filled with herbs to hopefully purify the air they breathe.
And they were also used as disguises because they believe that they could trick the Plague
Dat logic.
