Engineer useless?

Why do people think engineer is useless without any sentry? I go shotgun engineer all the time and I do just fine.

Mostly because of the stereotype that engineer is restricted to defensive measures.

Exactly. Battle engineer with gunslinger (Yes. I approve of the item. Don't sue.) + shotgun of any kind = actually really effective.

Gunslinger is amazing...for offense and maybe K.o.t.h. But on defense you want to at least BUILD a building and help your teammates. Your shotgun can kill, but a sentry (especially with wrangler) is like 5 shotguns.

Widowmaker + Gunslinger without building sentries is amazing for practicing your shotgun aim! I think there's no problem with that!

I can take out scouts. Not pro scouts but pub scouts easily with just my shotgun

Unless they happen to know what they're doing, in which case you're basically being buttraped by some of the most damaging classes. Also, I don't mind Engineers that refuse to make a sentry as long as they build teleporters and dispensers.

A good engineer with mini-sentry is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoying, that's why I started playing that class. I'm not fond of the big static sentries, they restrict you too much cos you have to repair them, watch out for spies etc. I like to leave my mini-sentry behind and then go shoot the crap out of my shotgun at anyone who tries to capture the point. The sentry will probably be destroyed but I can deploy a new one immediately. It's pretty effective if you've got good team balance backing you up.
