The encounters in the second game seem to be somewhat harder from the get-go, but again, it seems like you have to find an optimal sequence of actions to level up a bit before tackling the harder ones. It doesn't help that you can't customize the starting skills at the moment. Some of the new skills seem to have a much greater friendly-fire potential as well.
I'm playing on Classic difficulty btw, Explorer should be easier..
I understand your position, as I've struggled with playing Pillars of Eternity on a higher difficulty, it's not really fun when it's too hard. However, I'm sure once you'll understand the mechanics of how the combat-element works, it won't be too hard anymore. At least this is what I experienced with games I found really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard (like PoE and Baldurs Gate, etc).
If you prefer the hack-and-slash-genre, hate reading and prefer not to think while you game, I guess DOS isn't made for you.
Even on the hardest difficulty me and my partner would breeze through places. Of course we died. Of course we wiped. But dying, and repositioning ourselves and finding a strategy that works better was part of the fun!
That being said, D:OS has more difficulties, if this type of tactic ain't your cup of tea, I'd go on a more casual difficulty to just enjoy the rpg elements and so on.
D:OS2 only has 2 difficulties, featuring the same names from D:OS1. which is basicly:
- Easiest - Explorer
- Easy - Classic
Oh! I realize that maybe I sound a little condesending. I don't mean to! Let me clarify: D:OS is a lot easier to play if you had elemental magic. Once you got a good setup: a fire mage and a geomancer mage. a knockdown character. etc. You could blow up most enemies with breeze. You could stun someone down so much they would never, ever, touch you.
In my opinion, people who enjoyed being thieves or fighter classes would have a harder time in the beginning (while late game they were overpowered as ***)
D:OS2 is featuring a new feature that D:OS1 does not have:
a magic shield. and a meleeshield.
On top of your regular hp, all characters has an magic shield that will soak up magic dmg. Basicly adding an extra defence against magic. It feels more balanced that way, and harder for me as a mage lover.
These shields arn't a skill that gets cast or something, they're just an extra bar ontop of your hp bar that you need to break through.
If you do struggle to progress there is always 'explorer mode' difficulty which should be easy enough for most people.
As for difficulty, yeah, it's kinda difficult at some places in classic mode, I hope it remains the same way (although I'm only using two characters, which could very well be the source of tougher fights).
Personally I'm really looking forward to tactician mode and hope the game will remain hard in the later parts too. I played DOS:EE with a friend of mine and our biggest issue was that once you got past Cyseal in Tactician, pretty much everything became a joke. We could just destroy entire groups of mobs in tactician difficulty in one or two turns tops, which made it a rather dull experience after our initial playthrough.
Remember, its you and the game...enjoy it how you like. Bump that difficulty down , there's no shame in it ^_^ Better than wasting 60 bucks ha ha!
