Ranger Hardcore filters, what am I missing
I stocked up on the max# I could buy stations and stations ago and I scavenge as much as I can but I'm now inside the Library and running out. I see filters on dead guys but the game does not let me pick them up. Is that a bug or intentional? I picked up a few filters outside the library and my mask is not cracked, am not sure what's up.

In hardcore you have to manage the filters pretty well. What you can do to conserve them is take your mask off for a few seconds, you have about 30-45 second window (idr) to get stuff done before you die from asphyxiation.

It's not a bug. The game just works that way. Some filters can be only picked up if you have very little of them left. Some can be always picked up. But since you bought alot of them in the beginning, you can't pick most of the ones you find.
I gues devs desided that surface levels weren't hard enough so they implemented this feature.

mask on / mask off
get used to that wheezing sound and not being able to see clearly

I have like one filter left, I can't buy filters past like the second or third station way back in Chapter 2, so it's not that I'm full on them. I spent cash on them because I assumed it would help me out later on, did not expect to be choking to death for lack of filters.

Thanks for the mask on/off tip, that is going to be a ♥♥♥♥♥ to do around Librarians and ceiling wangs but I really don't want to go back and start over either. Hopefully that will last long enough to find a usable filter. Appreciate the tip.

the library is the hardest part when it comes to filters... but once you figured out where to go you can make it with walking around with your mask off until you hear a rough cough.
i started the library level with one filter and made it to the end with ~5 spare filters.

This to me is a broken feature. You shouldn`t have to remove your mask just to buy yourself time in an unbreathable environment. If your mask gets damaged and you pick up a new one, you lose all your filters, which is rediculous. I am stuck at a checkpoint with no mask or filters because I had to change masks because mine got so cracked. so once the game loads I have about 15 seconds before I`m dead because all the filters I picked up prior to changing my mask just got eaten on the mask change. Broken mechanic that cost me all the hours I invested in this playthrough because it leaves your save unplayable.

I hadn't noticed that when changing mask you lose your stash of filters?

I picked up 3 filters and about 30 seconds later did a mask change. After the mask change, I probably had about 60 seconds worth of air before the mask automatically takes itself off. I couldn`t go and put my old mask back on because it wouldn`t highlight and got stuck at the checkpoint with nowhere to go and about 15 seconfs worth of air before i keel over dead.

Ah, damn! That must be what happened. I have no idea when I changed masks last, I did not realize that happens. That is kind of bankrupt.

You do realize that you can restart a level at any point, right? And any of the previous levels for that matter. It's not like you have to start the game all over again.
And I also didn't notice that filters disppear when you change masks. Are you sure? Look at the number near the gas mask before and after changing masks.

I'm not entirely sure how filter pick ups work in this game. I don't think that picking up 3 filters actually allows to change them 3 times. More like it adds to an overall timer. So those 3 filter could just have very little air in them.

The filters are based on charcoal filters from real life, they have about 5 mins of breathing time to them. If you change them constantly you can pick up old/bad ones and leave the fresh one with an old mask. Annoying yes, but not gamebreaking.

I guess you lose the filter in the mask at the time of the swap and if it happened to be a good one with lots of time on it (compared to the crappy ones you find lying around)... you can lose big... is that the idea?

You know I didn`t think of restarting the lvl. I probably could have done that and been ok. But I`m not sure if it would have restarted the mission with your last current saves stats, so all the ammo and resources you used would be gone on the next attempt through. I`ll have to look into that the next time i install the game again.

No, it definitely doesn't penalize you that badly, it will load your stats from when they were saved. Had to do that railcar mission enough times to avoid that bug at the end. :(

What HerrComrade said. No penalty. Loading any of the previous levels basically loads your own save fron back when.
