You should only try ranger mode after you completed the game on other difficulty. Ranger mode will disable most of the hud, and you won't see the help tips: how to use gas mask/filters, light charger, ect. Also sometimes you will need to press the right buttons at the right moment, but on ranger mode it won't show you which button to press, and when.

The easier of the two ranger modes is the way to go for realism. I get the most out of the game with that setting. If you are familiar to any FPS games, it's not too hard. It just doesn't hold your hand like most games nowadays do...

Oh so it have quick time events... so if i use an xbox 360 controller will that display or is it like battlefield 3 where the on screen prompts are still for the keyboard and mouse even though i use a controller?

Look at me. Look deep into my tiger eyes. Go Ranger. It's truly the only way to go. Sure, the game might not tell you certain things, but games never used to tell you anything until these crappy FPS's we have today came around.

If you go Ranger, you get an atmospheric, immersive, and truly terrifying survival horror expierience. With other difficulties, you get an atmospheric FPS. You're choice, but I'd highly reccomend Ranger.

I found both the games to be a bit tougher than most games when taking difficulty settings into account. Especially this is noticeable when you meet a certain creature who's name begins with an L.
