It's very complex and will take a wild even to get the basics down. Wether it's good comes down a lot to personal preference. Myself I'm still unsure, but I have 60hr clocked so far and I drop in and out of it.
Note: Last patch has bugged the Hiver AI so avoid playing against it until fixed. It bankrupts itself very easily.
Overall its turned out ok.
How's teh combat? Has it improved at all since SOTS1?
I bought this game upon release. It was a mess then. Now it is a very fun game, once you get around some small quirks. I played the first game a bit but have played with this one more. If I am mentioning things that are the same I apologise in advance (but to my knowledge they are new).
-It runs well with few/no CTD's (unless a patch pops something loose).
-I experience slow end of turn times but this is apparently being addressed.
-Combat is a bit like SOTS 1 but instead of single planets you are dealing with (potentially) large systems and other orbital bodies.
The scale is generally much larger, you have stations to manage and multiple planets within systems.
-The combat is more technical in places. You now have armour layers, speed and facing to factor in. For example you cannot fire PD when in 'fast' engine mode. Hivers favour broadsides but morrigi favour forward facing attacks. The list goes on.
-Due to the feasibility study system you have to be adaptable throughout the game. You cannot scan the research page on turn 1 and decide what you are going for. All the techs are visible but you have to test their feasibility to see which ones you have a good chance to get. For this reason your tactics may well change mid-game, that fantastic laser cruiser you were hoping to make may be unobtainable but a ballistics cruiser could be the alternative.
One VERY important new feature is the chat window. While playing you can access a chat window and ask any question there. There are plenty of people (like myself) that are happy to help.
Hope this is useful.
depends what you look for in combat. the biggest diffrence between sots1 and sots 2 is that combat in sots 1 is fought on a much bigger scale. basically over the entire system that round just one planet. this does give the player alot more tacticle scope and flexability when running battles however said battles can also take alot longer to complete.
the larger the system the larger the tacticle map.
The chat window scares me! I always forget its there and then I click on this little flashy thing and suddenly I'm talking to the whole world in singleplayer :P
The option to disable auto-login to global chat was added in a recent patch.
