Use Neutral Stance and set your Facing to Target (one on the far left), and your ships should always point at your selected target.
Pursuit mode also tends to work better than Close to Engage stance, but again depends on your faction. Each one's Pursuit mode works differently, for example the Liir one will have thier cruisers orbit the target.
And lancers are very effective at crusier killing when used properly and you enemies aren't packing later armours and structural reinforcement techs /muwahahahaha
Then there are 4 "stance" options. You want Neutral or Pursuit. DO NOT using Close to Attack or Stand-off stance when using direct fire weapons.
