Theres literally a topic named "Worth it?" right beneath your topic...

Yes, its worth it. I've got 160 hours in and about 150 of that was good fun.

It was never the worst game ever, just very, very buggy. After most of the bugs have been squashed, it's now definitely worth playing.

yes its worth it though you may want to invset some of the time you might spend playing this game in english lessons.

Game is fine. It's got less bugs and balance issues than your average AAA MMO - but it does have a few. The devs are very dedicated to the game and are fixing it and adding to it just about weekly or every other week. I'd give it 4/5 right now - with potential for a 5/5.

just dont try multiplayer, then you might go nice without much problems ;) But I think multiplayer still needs some more weeks/month of development. Sots has always been a multiplayer game for me, so I dont enjoy it that much right now untill it is fixed. But it seems the single Player is pretty stable right now.
But to be honest, it isnt easy to learn this game. Not because its so hard to learn or so complex. There is just no good documentation and you will have to search for all infos on the internet or in the built-in chat.

But if you like such games and can get the game for 10€ or something like that, you might give it a try. I wouldnt say its not worth it, but I also wouldnt recommend it right now. Some like it, some hate it.

Awesome game. Best 4x game i've ever played. Maybe was buggy and had some problems here and there but now is a great grame.

AI presently needs work as it's not building up it's colony worlds and thus gets stomped by debt, so make sure to set it to hard, econ to 150-200% also helps. Or give everyone 9 colony worlds. Otherwise the $20 is a steal, and should help keep the game developing further past the bug fixes :P

My personal opinion is NO.

Much like the early Total War games (Medieval 2 and earlier), Sots 1 got the balance between 4X TBS & homeworld-esque RTS just right.
The time you spent building your empire (boring, 'work'), was offset nicely by the time you spent fighting with your armies (fun, 'play').

The expansions to Sots 1 introduced more complexity and micro to the TBS portions of the game; this skewed the balance away from what I consider to the the 'fun' part of the game in favour of more 'work'.
Sots 2 seems to go even further in this direction, which IMO is a tragic mistake.
The bugs, lack of polish & poor UI layout of Sots 2 make it even less appealing.

Before dismissing me as 'not the intended audience', amongst many other strategy games, I've put thousands of hours into Civ IV, and more recently hundreds of hours into Crusader Kings 2, neither of which have visually engaging combat of any kind!
The difference is that the TBS strategic decision making in Civ IV & CK2 *is* the fun part of the game; in Sots 2 the TBS strategy is the (overly long) chore you have to do in-between the (too infrequent) fun.

you dont have to say TBS starategy because that expanded would be turnbased strategy strategy.

How old are you ? 13 ? That's maybe why you never played better 4x game...
Sins of a solar empire / Endless space are much, much better.

Sins apparently is only good if your looking for a stripped down 4x with no micro managing
Commodore Dannerson Dec 29, 2012 @ 4:17am
you can get some pretty large scale if very simplistic battles though.
