Boarding pods
I'm on like...241 something as the Tarkans and I'm doing fine against the humans, more on the defensive until I build up a stronger offense, but I'm getting hit by the suul' ka horde with their goddamn boarding pods.

Tips for this?

Also, is it smart to have a balanced fleet, or does this game devolve to spamming dreadnaughts

PD lots of PD.

PD Ships (the specific mission section) and get them infront of your fleet so the pods have to fly by a hailstorm of PD doom to hit your prime targets. The Zuul boarding ships without pods are actually pretty weak so should go down to your fewer combat ships pretty easily.
It's pretty tech and tactics dependant in terms of what ships are the "best". I will say 3 cruisers set up correctly (HCL's or Torpedos) will toast a dreadnaught pretty quickly if your not careful so I think it deters from heavy Dreadnaught spam.

I actually find DN's to be pretty weak if you can invest in shielding. Which in my experience only covers cruiser class ships. So with Mark 2 or 3 shielding and fleet of 8 cruisers with photon torpedos (and the rest of the slots PD systems) can wreak havok through most of the game.

Balanced fleets are excellent, especially once you get Leviathans, since you need to start specializing your dreads heavily. On your main question, try to get a mix of PD choices and employ them all on your ships. Interceptors and Phalanx PD are really effective against boarding pods.

Tarka escort BR will do a better job imo. They can PD and "shield/block" pods/missiles. But needs lot of micro.

Also mid game dreadnoughts will dominate but nearing end game crusiers are better bang for buck and can toast Dread/Levi spams fairly good. Provided you have the necessary shield, torp, HCL or impactor research. Also, theres constant retrofitting needed unless you're rich enough to field fleets for all types of enemies. If you get bad roll for them, especially shields, then i suggest going Dread/Levi spam.

There's also difference with species (or races, whatever). Some have better cruisers and other favor dreads.

I too find boarding pods to be a major pain to fight against when spammed.

Stack Semper Fi modules and theres a new tech in the Cybernetics tree thats aptly named "Defenders" thats basically attack bots that aid in repelling boarders. With the tech and Semper Fi modules you should be able to beat back a fair amount of pods that make it through.

The tarkans suffer more against the sulka then say the humans due to a lack of light weapon slots on their ships. Which translates to less PD potential. However this can be countered by using dedicated point defence vessels as mentioned above.

Personally i find it very hard to stop a Boarding party blob even with PD ships. However the AI is very bad at spreading their boarding parties and at selecting targets. So a sacrificial cruiser works very well. Using PD cruisers as this is the best combo. because even if they dont shoot them all down they dont pose much of a threat once lost.

The ideal PD weapon is the PD missiles as every PD slot comes into play no matter what direction they come from. Another counter is light drones with PD weaponry, but they are usually less effective since suulka dont launch the boarding pods until they are quite close so a kiting tactic might be in order.
