Is it finally playable?
I gave up on it a year ago when the fps was 2.

Yes. I and the "ITS TIME" guy and others have said this -- we bought it a year ago, mostly didn't touch it because it was so terrible, and then took a look at it again with this release. Me, I have the "colonized first world" achievement back in Dec 31, 2011, then "fully terraformed first world" (a very basic thing that'll happen in your early turns of any game) in June, and then "welcome back" on Dec 3. I've played almost twenty hours of it since End of Flesh came out, and my grand total sots2 is 26 hours.

I've mostly played the Suul'ka Horde, though.
If your computer isn't the best you still might get low FPS. Personally if I have Bloom off or the graphic settings on anything but maximum I /lose/ FPS. The game is highly enjoyable now, so give it a shot.
OTOH, I've been playing through the Alpha and the current Beta stage and the game is still unfinished to the extent that they never bothered to put in the starting cinematic, which is why you have that uncomfortable silence when you boot the game. it's certainly playable, but 'fun' is a whole other matter.
I appreciate it that the game is still unfinished after a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ YEAR, but your example is a bit of silence when you start the game? I get my fun with Wraith Abductors and strike missions. The game of the game is finally worth the money I put on it.
I dislike how annoying it is to move ships and get them to do stuff. Mainly if you finish any mission they come right back. So conolony ships with surveyors do ♥♥♥♥. You need to send one then another....

that actually makes sense. why risk your colony ships on a wild jaunt into the unknown.
I finally took the plunge and bought the game a few days ago; logged about 21 hours. Short answer: Yes, it's playable, but the learning curve is steep. A lot of stuff is undocumented and you kinda need to fiddle around with things in order to figure them out. Because of the missions system, the way research is laid out (feasibility before actual "research) and building works, the game also plays out at a scale much loooonger than SOTS1. Still enjoyable though, imo.

Then why bother to give it guns in the first place? Way I see it, it is a weak fighter if needed.
I'm trying to decide between this and endless space. My problem with endless space is it seemed to have pretty poor diplomacy options. I want a 4x game that has more than combat to do. Perhaps some empire managment (maybe politics), and diplomacy as an option. Thoughts?

I will say have played <1hr w/ Sword of the Stars 1. (I got it for $2 long ago and never started it). I will say I didn't quite like the UI in the first one. It was very hard to see the layout of the stars or get information on individual stars. The UI color choices in the first one seem poor. Screenshots do show this one to be a little bit better. But Endless Space had a phenominal UI.
I'm debating picking this up because it looks like something I'd want to play. I bought Endless Space, but it can't keep my attention because of the lack of control in combat - simply picking battle modifiers in a rock-paper-scissors format isn't enough for me. I want to actually control my units. For $20, this doesn't look too bad.

Endless Space has a nice UI and decent empire management but the combat is definitely hollow. Pure rock paper scissors is not a way to design a 4X or strategy game.

Fair warning then: SoTS2's diplomacy is pretty bare bones. They've been adding to it gradually, but I'm not sure how deep the end goal for it is. My personal experience - and maybe I'm just doing it wrong - is that it's all pretty random at the moment; the other empire's opinion of me seems to have little bearing on how they actually react, and the diplomacy options intended to influence their opinion seem to have little or no effect.

When it comes to comparing SoTS2 with Endless Space, I'd say the latter has somewhat more in-depth empire/colony management, but the former has far better combat and more interesting ship design & tech tree. Neither has a lot in the way of political intrigue and diplomacy (although I'm not sure I can think of a space 4x that does - pretty much all of them fall somewhere between zero and not much)

to give it some way of defending itself if it gets intercepted while traveling bvetween stars. it can happen.
if u havent played sots 1 id recomend buying that and play it while you wait for sots 2 to become more stable.

Is the difference between 1 and 2 evolutionary or revolutionary? (I've heard that the two are very different)
