Very useful things you need to know about. (Tips & Tricks)
Refit naval station weapons: I recommend beams or MIRV missiles - choose long range weapons. To refit a station go to the system that its at and open the fleets tab along the left - keep expanding the stations tab till you get to the station you want. Then you either left or right click the name to bring up the refit option.

Ship design all mount size to same weapon: Ever want all your small mounts to be PD weapons but tired of selecting all light mounts to swap'em to PD? Well, normally everyone left-clicks a turret and then left-clicks the weapon they want in it... BUT! If you RIGHT-CLICK the desired weapon, it'll make ALL turrets of that size into the weapon you right-clicked!

Splitting fleet for wider coverage in battle manager: You know in the battle manager when you drag a fleet out onto your colored "territories"? Well, it'll look like a bunch of small boxes on a grid that contain your ships - you can SEPERATE those boxes by clicking and dragging them away. This will allow you to have your fleets starting posistion much more to your liking. I.E. you may want to have your supply ships and command ship start much father back than your brawler ships.

Keep in mind that stations can only be upgraded after reaching class 2 or better. Class 3 (or better) is required to upgrade ships.

Don't forget that you can upgrade your older ships with newer weapons, giving them extra life in a pinch. ;)

You are not stuck with whatever setting (slider) you've used for research, it can be moved at any time. When you get close to completion (beyond 50%, but before reaching 100%), it can be a lot more efficient to reduce your spending to try and get that breakthrough and increasing your chances of completing no greater then 100%. Sometimes it will let you complete much faster then if you pile lots of funds into it and reach the 150% (meaning you spent more then needed and without any greater speed).

During the first turn of the game, all ship prototypes are FREE, so if you don't like the default ships, redesign them it's FREE (and if you wish, can upgrade them as well, though that is not free, since your home system starts with a class 4 naval station. ;)

Don't forget that your ships can be rebased after completing a mission during the mission planning stage. So say you have a survey fleet that is exploring a system close to a planet on one side of your empire, instead of having it return to it's "base", send it to another planet closer to your next survey using the rebase option (be sure you have the CE present at the new base to house it) Much better then letting it return to it's original base and then use the relocate mission.

You can assign a mision by right clicking the planet like always, but you can now also assign missions to the fleets directly, by right clicking the fleet, and then picking the mission, and then the target. ;)

I would add that if you find your home system under attack early on, it's important to note that your starting naval station has a number of uninstalled modules (including combat ones).

Bump for new players. Also, use the online global chat! Just click the flashing "speech bubble" icon on the bottom bar and you can chat in real-time with other players who are on. Usually there are veteran players who can give advice!
