I was just playing, game crashed. I think it has a memory leak. The expansion they just released seems to have borked most of what they had spent the past few years fixing.
I'm not seeing this dimitry and this isnt the case players seem to be reporting to us.

Please post any crash logs to our forums, so we can examine and solve any remaining issues.
@lee the metascore is from release, just no ones bothered to update it since then.

Ah it's nice to see the devs still communicating with the community after all the negativity, thank you for sticking truh this!

I'd guess the game would get a solid 60 review now - maybe pushing up to a 70 if the reviewer really liked the game and graphics. There are still some rough edges and some room to work on things; but for fans of the genre its well worth considering getting and most people don't have major repeat crash problems (although it does still seem to have some errors in late game sitations for some people).

Also don't forget that the developers and publisher have continued with the title for a year since launch and based on the free expansion pack just released I suspect that they are confident to keep working at it further. My hope is that the free expansion and continued support means they'll keep refining and working on the title and build toward another expansion at the very least (though I suspect a second expansion will be a paid for addition, but I can't imagin many not wanting to go for it)
The game still have plenty of bugs. But allmost all of the critical game breaking ones have been fixed and the controls/ui/etc has been streamlined since release.

You can most likely enjoy the game now, i know i can.
Just tried this again after i heard about the enhanced edition, have played roughly 5 hours and still no bugs other than the liir ship graphics (windows penetrating the hulls and showing as black patches from every angle, same as at release) but the game breaking ones and crashes seem to have disappeared. Also the battle system seem to be refined. My biggest complaint would be the extremely slow start, 5 hours in and i have still not been into my first real battle... just surveying, researching and trying to find planets to expand too.. it´s just not as fun as the original where you could send tankers and scouts and get into some interesting skirmishes within the first hour with cheap ships that didn´t mattter if they lost much anyway. In this game the ships are so valuable you really can´t afford to throw them away just to see the nice graphics and battles... which makes it you you REALLY have to dedicate alot of time to get anything interesting out of this game. I would give it a 7 at this point though, but mostly really for the hard-core fans and 4x junkies.

Metcritic dosent allow updates.
One of many reasons why MC it BS.

sots 2 is based around a diffrent set of base mechanics. that said theres nothing stoping you from playing sots 1

Thanks but i have already played that game to death, everytime i boot it up i just start fantasizing how great it would be with the sots 2 graphics, new weapons, new ships, new grand menaces and random events, since i have already seen everything in the original 100s of times.

Granted, it is rather complete that game, but honestly i cant stand it anymore. Sots 2 could have been exactly what i wanted, but sadly it is not... since it destroys the core gameplay with its new unfun mechanics outside batte... hope they manage to make it fun someday, since the graphics are stellar already.
fun is subjective
I bought the game on release, tried to play it a bit. Then tried it again in June. And then tried it with this release. Prior to this release, I had less than two hours of 'gameplay'. With this release, since a few days ago, I've had eleven hours. I'm having fun, and something I didn't expect to ever happen, happened: I came to prefer SotS2's way of doing things to SotS1's. The fleet, orders, invoices, stations, multiple planets per system, battle manager, blah, I like it; small empire management scale better to large empire management, and your forces are, ah, not quite 'fire and forget', but 'fire and then get back to me when I should fire you again'.

It still doesn't have scenarios, there's no full screen, uninteresting (e.g., one planet by itself vs. invading force) combat can't be fast-forwarded enough, the UI is bog slow, but: I clear you to go ahead and play it now. You're welcome.

Disclaimer: I haven't played the Loa. And apparently Hivers are very annoying to play. I do what I do every time I fire up SotS: look at all the fascinating factions, and then play the faction that calls me 'Greatfather' and 'Dominus', and which says "load the women into the ships, maggots, we're leaving", and which has slave and tribute stations, and which can summon Cthulhu to fight alongside and teleport their forces later on in the game. >:-) AI ships made out of legos? Bah. Bah!
as a trade oriented faction i tend to kill zuul on site. pray we never meet.
I just started playing this, about 4-5 hours worth, and the game hasn't crashed yet. I really have enjoyed all the depth in the turn based game and the fact that their are real time battles make it like a combination of Europa Universalis with the naval battles from Empire Total War all in space.

All that being said, it does take a second to get used to the interface and the missions set up and I'm still not totally sure what I'm doing but I have been having fun... Here are some links to a good on-going tutorial:

Strategic Screen:

These two were made the last two days so there should be more. Also here is a link to the forums:

All this stuff has gotten me much more into the game and really convinced me to buy it because I was skeptical after I read how awful the original product was...
I tried playing again a few days ago to see how things had progressed, started a Sol game that crashed to desktop after pressing the End Turn button on turn 20. Maybe I will try again in a few months. I really want this game to work after playing SotS1 so much.
