Is it 3rd person
Is it only a map of the galaxy? Is there no planets do explore?Do you get to see the ship all the time?

There are two views. The strategic view, where you give your fleets orders (also assign research and shipyard orders etc.), and the tactical view. You only have the tactical view when in battle. You are a commander giving your ships orders on a 3rd person fleet basis. You can give individual ships orders but you cannot directly pilot the vessels. This is not boring however as late game you can have alot of ships with varying loadout (and ranges!) that fill different roles. For this reason you need to be aware of the fleet as a whole and a single 1st person ship view would not work.

You send fleets to survey planets, this is the 'exploration' part of the game. Having scout fleets with better sensors (than your combat fleets as sensor modules are fragile) is important later as it can provide intel on the enemy and what their relative strength is on planets in range.
